The dMAT is the newest requirement in the German admissions process, and in the space of ten weeks it has created more confusion among Indian applicants than any change since APS became mandatory in 2022. If your Bachelor’s degree is in engineering, commerce, finance, economics, business or management, and you’re targeting a German Master’s from Summer Semester 2027 onward, you now need two separate things before you can apply: your APS certificate, and the dMAT.
They are not the same document, one does not replace the other, and getting the order wrong is currently the single most common mistake we see in Germany-bound files. This guide untangles both, gives you the registration window that closes in exactly one week from today, and tells you honestly what actually happens if your score is low or you miss the date.
Run yourself through three questions, in order. If you get a “no” at any point, you are not affected and only need your regular APS certificate.
| Question | If yes | If no |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Is your target intake Summer Semester 2027 or later? | Continue to question 2 | You are not affected. Winter Semester 2026/27 applicants proceed under the existing APS process with no dMAT |
| 2. Is your Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management? | Continue to question 3 | You are not affected, regardless of intake |
| 3. Did you register your APS application, or ship your complete APS documents, on or after 29 June 2026? | The dMAT applies to you | You are exempt for this APS procedure, even though your field and intake match |
A fourth exemption sits outside this sequence entirely: if you already hold an APS certificate, or you are on an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university-partnership programme, it does not apply to that procedure regardless of field or intake. PhD applicants and Bachelor’s applicants are never affected: this requirement, in its current form, exists for Master’s applicants only.
The Akademische Pruefstelle (APS) certificate has been mandatory for Indian applicants to German universities since October 2022. It exists to verify that your academic documents, meaning degree certificates, semester mark sheets and the institution that issued them, are genuine before a German university or a visa officer has to work that out themselves. It says nothing about how good a student you are. It confirms that the paper trail is real.
The current APS fee is ₹18,000, non-refundable under any circumstance, including rejection or withdrawal. Processing normally takes 3 to 4 weeks, but can stretch to up to three months in peak season, largely because APS often has to write to your university or board to confirm your marksheets, and that step is outside APS India’s control. The certificate, once issued, is valid for life. You never need to repeat this for the same qualification.
Every Indian applicant to a German university needs an APS certificate, in every field, at both Bachelor’s and Master’s level. The dMAT changes none of that. It adds one more document to the file for a specific subset of Master’s applicants; it does not touch the APS process itself.
The Digital Master Test (dMAT) is a standardised academic aptitude test that APS India announced on 29 June 2026, introduced in cooperation with the Universities of Ulm and Kassel and originally developed with support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It is not administered by APS India at all. That job belongs to a separate body, the Gesellschaft fuer Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung e.V., known as g.a.s.t., which also runs TestDaF. A simple way to keep the two apart: APS India checks whether your documents are real, and g.a.s.t. runs a test measuring how you reason.
The dMAT has two parts, sat in one sitting:
It is entirely computer-based, conducted in English, and, this is the detail almost every explainer video skips, it is not a knowledge test. There is nothing to revise in the sense of syllabus content. g.a.s.t. publishes official preparation material and introductory videos for each subtest, and working through those is the only meaningful preparation available.
No, and this is the question most searches on this topic are actually asking. The dMAT certificate is one additional document inside your APS file. It does not replace APS document verification, it does not replace the formal recognition of your degree, and it does not replace anabin, the database that confirms whether your specific university and programme are recognised in Germany at all.
| APS Certificate | dMAT | |
|---|---|---|
| Run by | APS India | g.a.s.t. |
| What it checks | Authenticity of your academic documents | General cognitive and academic reasoning skills |
| Who needs it | Every Indian applicant, Bachelor’s and Master’s, any field | Master’s applicants in Engineering, Commerce/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management, Summer 2027 intake onward, unless exempt |
| Fee | ₹18,000 | €150 (about ₹16,500 at today’s rate) |
| Result appears on | Your APS certificate | A separate dMAT certificate, also referenced on your APS certificate |
| Does a good result guarantee anything? | No, it only confirms documents are genuine | No, a good score does not guarantee APS clearance or university admission |
One sequencing detail matters more than anything else in this section: you can submit your APS application documents before your dMAT certificate is available. APS India can begin verifying your other documents in the meantime. What it cannot do is issue your APS certificate until the required dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked. If you’re required to take the dMAT and you wait to start APS until after you have your dMAT result, you’re adding weeks you didn’t need to add.
APS India’s official affected-fields list covers three groups: Engineering; Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or Economics; and Business or Management. Within engineering, this is understood to include computer science and IT-adjacent Bachelor’s degrees, though the official list is the authority if your specific programme title is ambiguous.
Four categories sit outside the requirement entirely, regardless of field:
And three transitional exemptions apply even if your field and intake match:
If you start a fresh APS application later, the rules in force at that later date apply. An old exemption doesn’t carry forward to a new procedure.
The first India cycle runs on four fixed dates, and as of publish date, no second cycle has been officially announced by either APS India or g.a.s.t.:
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 29 June 2026 | Registration opened |
| 15 September 2026 | Registration deadline, one week from this post’s publish date |
| 26 September 2026 | Test date |
| 12 October 2026 | Certificate published via the g.a.s.t. test-takers’ portal |
Registration, payment, test-centre booking and results are all handled through g.a.s.t.’s portal at d-mat.de, not through APS India’s website. The fee is €150, roughly ₹16,500 at today’s exchange rate, charged separately from your ₹18,000 APS fee. Budget close to ₹34,500 in total if you need both.
India test centres currently listed are Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune, with Berlin and Kathmandu also offered for applicants based there. Seats are booked first-come, first-served, and the final list is confirmed only during registration, so a full centre near you can mean travelling to the nearest available one.
The test itself runs about 3.5 hours, computer-based, with one break between the Core Module and the Subject Module. You’ll need a valid passport or ID card matching your registration exactly, and the identity checks continue through the exam, not just at entry.
Here is the correction that matters most in this entire guide, and it is stated plainly on APS India’s own FAQ page: the dMAT is not a stand-alone pass/fail test for your APS certificate. A German Embassy spokesperson made the same point publicly in July 2026, saying the test was explicitly designed not to act as a hard pass-fail barrier. There is no published minimum score that APS India enforces before it will issue your certificate.
What actually happens with a low score is more nuanced than “fail” suggests:
So “failing” the dMAT, in the sense of a scored outcome, mostly isn’t the risk. The real risk sits elsewhere, in the next section.
The genuine risks are procedural, not score-based, and they’re worth stating exactly as g.a.s.t.’s terms and conditions describe them:
The question that should actually worry you is not “what if I score low,” but “what if I miss the 15 September registration deadline.” As of this post’s publish date, there is no confirmed second sitting for this cycle. Multiple industry sources speculate about a sitting in early-to-mid 2027, but neither g.a.s.t. nor APS India has published a second date. If your target is Summer Semester 2027 and you’re in an affected field, missing this window is currently a real risk to that specific intake. Not a guaranteed one, since a later cycle may yet appear before your university’s deadline, but not one to plan around.
How this plays out depends heavily on your profile. Three worked examples:
| Profile | Required? | Recommended sequence |
|---|---|---|
| Final-year BTech (CSE), graduating May 2027, no prior APS activity | Yes | Register now, sit it on 26 September, submit APS documents in parallel without waiting for the dMAT certificate, then add the dMAT certificate once issued on 12 October |
| BCom graduate, two years’ work experience in finance, APS documents shipped in August 2026 | Yes. The pre-29 June 2026 exemption does not apply, because shipment was after the cut-off | Same as above. Field and post-cut-off shipment date both point to the dMAT being required |
| BSc Physics graduate targeting Summer 2027 | No | Proceed on the standard APS-only track. The field sits outside the affected list |
Notice the second row deliberately: a lot of confusion this cycle comes from assuming “I already started APS” is protective. It’s only protective if your registration or shipment happened before 29 June 2026. After that date, ordinary field and intake rules apply regardless of when in the cycle you started.
Three patterns show up repeatedly in the confusion around this requirement:
Treating the dMAT as a university entrance exam. It isn’t. It’s an aptitude test that becomes part of your APS documentation. A German university’s own admission decision is separate and can weigh, or ignore, the dMAT result however it chooses.
Waiting for the dMAT certificate before starting APS. This adds weeks you don’t need to add. Submit everything else and let APS begin verification while your dMAT result is still pending.
Assuming a low score disqualifies you. APS India’s own FAQ says otherwise, in writing. The filter that matters more is anabin recognition of your institution, a step the dMAT cannot influence either way.

Book a Free ConsultationNo. The dMAT requirement applies to applications relating to the Summer Semester 2027 Master intake and subsequent intakes. Winter Semester 2026/27 applicants proceed under the existing APS process without it.
No. The dMAT is one additional element inside your APS documentation. APS India continues to verify your academic documents exactly as before, and the dMAT certificate is submitted alongside that documentation for affected applicant groups.
Bachelor’s applicants, PhD applicants, students in officially confirmed exchange or double-degree programmes, applicants outside the three affected fields, and anyone who registered for APS or shipped complete APS documents before 29 June 2026 for that specific procedure.
The dMAT fee is €150, roughly ₹16,500 at current exchange rates, paid to g.a.s.t. separately from the ₹18,000 APS India fee. Budget for both if you’re required to take it.
Yes. You may submit your APS documents first, and APS India can begin verifying them. The APS certificate itself, however, can only be issued once the required dMAT certificate has been submitted and checked.
APS India states explicitly that the dMAT is not a stand-alone pass/fail test for the APS certificate, and a low score does not automatically lead to a refusal. Your result is reflected on your APS certificate, and individual German universities then decide independently how to weigh it in admissions.
As of this post’s publish date, no second cycle has been officially confirmed by g.a.s.t. or APS India for this admission cycle. Treat 15 September as a hard deadline rather than assume a later sitting will appear in time for Summer 2027.
g.a.s.t.’s published terms guarantee a retake only where a technical fault on their end voided part of your exam. Beyond that, retaking depends on a future cycle being scheduled and announced. There is no confirmed unlimited-attempts policy published for this cycle.
No. Admission decisions rest entirely with the individual German university. The dMAT certificate is one document among several in your file, and it does not override anabin recognition, your grades, or the university’s own admission decision.
