GRE required for Fall 2027: Indian student preparing for the GRE with a US university campus in the background — Do You Still Need the GRE for Fall 2027?, a blog by Maven Consulting Services

Last verified: 16 October 2026, against the official admissions pages of 15 US graduate programmes at Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech, UIUC, Stony Brook, Texas A&M, USC, UT Austin and Columbia, and against ETS’s own GRE score and fee pages. GRE policies change between cycles, sometimes quietly, so we date every row and update this page when a department changes its rule.

The Short Answer

Is the GRE required for Fall 2027 admission to a US master’s?

It depends on the programme, not the university. Of the 15 department pages we checked on 16 October 2026, four require the GRE from Indian applicants for Fall 2027, two recommend it, six make it optional or simply do not require it, and two will not look at a score at all. One more has not yet published its Fall 2027 rule. Some funding committees still weigh scores even where admission does not need them.

For the 2027 cycle, one MIT department has now changed its GRE rule three times in three years. MIT Mechanical Engineering did not require the GRE for the 2025 admissions cycle, required it for Fall 2026, and has dropped it again for Fall 2027. If the GRE list you downloaded last year says otherwise, the list is not wrong because someone was careless. It is wrong because the rules keep moving.

So, is GRE required for Fall 2027? The honest answer is that it depends on the exact programme you apply to, and sometimes on whether you hold an Indian degree rather than an American one. Two departments at the same university can sit at opposite ends of the scale. Stanford’s Computer Science master’s will not consider a GRE score, while Stanford’s Management Science and Engineering master’s requires one from every applicant.

This guide sorts US programmes into four groups (required, recommended, optional and not accepted), using examples we checked on the department pages themselves, not on third-party GRE-waiver lists. It then explains when an optional score still helps an Indian applicant, and gives the last test date that safely reaches a 15 December deadline. If you are still shortlisting, start with our Study in the USA guide.

It matters this week because October is when the GRE window for December deadlines starts to close. The test itself is available almost every day, but official scores take 8 to 10 days to reach your ETS account, and a retake needs a 21-day gap. A decision you put off until late November is a decision made for you.

Is GRE Required for Fall 2027? The Short Answer

No single rule applies to US graduate admissions. Each department, and sometimes each degree inside a department, sets its own GRE policy for each cycle. After the pandemic most programmes dropped the requirement. Since then a smaller group has kept it or brought it back, many have settled on optional, and some have gone further and stopped reading scores altogether.

Across the 15 programmes we checked on 16 October 2026, the picture for Fall 2027 looks like this:

  • Required (4): Stanford MS&E, Stanford Statistics MS, Texas A&M Industrial and Systems Engineering master’s, and Stony Brook Computer Science MS for international applicants without a US or Canadian degree.
  • Recommended (2): Carnegie Mellon MS in Computer Science (strongly recommended) and UIUC Siebel School MS (recommended but not required).
  • Optional or not required (6): Georgia Tech MSCS, USC Viterbi master’s, MIT Mechanical Engineering, MIT EECS, MIT Sloan Master of Business Analytics, and UT Austin McCombs MS programmes including Business Analytics. Several of these still consider a score if you send one.
  • Not accepted (2): UC Berkeley EECS and Stanford Computer Science MS.
  • Not yet announced (1): Columbia Engineering, whose master’s site still describes a GRE waiver for Fall 2026 only.

That is a snapshot of 15 programmes, not a census of the United States. What it shows clearly is the pattern: the answer lives on each programme’s own page, for the current cycle, and nowhere else.

Why the GRE Lists You Found Online Are Probably Out of Date

Most students build their shortlist from a GRE-waiver list on a forum, a coaching site or a WhatsApp forward. These lists age badly for three reasons.

  1. Policies change every cycle. MIT Mechanical Engineering is the clearest example. Its department page told 2025 applicants the GRE was not required, its 2026 page said GRE scores were required, and its current page for September 2027 entry says the GRE is not required except for two naval engineering programmes. A list compiled in any one of those years was right for one year only.
  2. Search engines keep old copies. When we searched for Georgia Tech’s MSCS requirements, the summary shown in search results still said GRE scores were required and could not be waived. The live department page says the opposite: a GRE score is not required for admission, and if provided it will be considered.
  3. Cycle labels lag behind. Some pages are updated for the new deadlines before the policy text is refreshed. Stony Brook’s Computer Science admissions page already lists Fall 2027 deadlines, but its GRE section is still headed ‘Spring 2026 and Fall 2026’. Columbia Engineering’s master’s site still talks only about Fall 2026.

The fix is simple and takes five minutes per programme, which we set out further down. Read the department page itself, find the cycle the policy applies to, and save a dated screenshot.

Maven Note: If a GRE list does not show the date each row was checked and link to the department page, treat it as a starting point for your own research, not as an answer. The table in this post shows both, and we will update it when policies change.

Required, Recommended, Optional, Not Accepted: What Each Label Means

Universities use these words loosely, so it helps to know what each one usually means in practice for an applicant from India.

Label on the pageWhat it usually meansWhat you should do
RequiredNo score, no review. Some programmes allow a hardship exemption, but you have to ask for it.Book the test. Read the exemption wording carefully before relying on it.
Strongly recommended or recommendedYou can apply without a score, but the committee expects one and may ask you to explain its absence.Treat it as required unless the rest of your file is clearly strong.
Optional or ‘considered if provided’A score is read if you send it. Not sending one is not held against you on paper.Send a score that helps; keep back a weak one.
Not required (with no mention of considering scores)The programme has removed the GRE from its checklist.Usually skip it unless funding or another programme on your list needs it.
Not accepted or not consideredScores are ignored even if sent.Do not send one, and do not spend money on the test for this programme.
Not yet announcedThe new cycle’s rule has not been published.Prepare as if it may be required, and check again in November.

One more distinction matters. ‘Waived’ often means a temporary decision for one cycle, while ‘not required’ or ‘not accepted’ usually describes a standing policy. A waiver that applied to Fall 2026 tells you nothing certain about Fall 2027.

GRE Required for Fall 2027: What 15 US Department Pages Say

Every row below was checked on the programme’s own website on 16 October 2026. We have recorded what the page says, not what we expect it to say next year.

ProgrammeGRE policy as publishedDetail worth knowing
Stanford, Computer Science MSNot acceptedThe FAQ says GRE scores are not required and not considered from MS applicants.
Stanford, Management Science and Engineering MSRequiredRequired of all applicants regardless of education or work experience; hardship exemption on request. Test must be taken, not received, by the deadline.
Stanford, Statistics MSRequiredGRE General Test required for MS and PhD; MS deadline 7 January 2027.
MIT, EECSNot requiredNo terminal master’s for external applicants; you apply for the PhD. Deadline 1 December.
MIT, Mechanical EngineeringNot required for Fall 2027Required for Fall 2026 entry; not required now except for the 2N and 2N6 naval programmes. Deadline 1 December 2026.
MIT Sloan, Master of Business AnalyticsOptionalGMAT or GRE optional; applicants with a score are encouraged to submit it as an additional data point.
Carnegie Mellon, MS in Computer ScienceStrongly recommendedIf you have no score, explain why in your SOP. GRE at Home scores not accepted except from two old date windows. Final deadline 9 December 2026.
UC Berkeley, EECS MS and PhDNot acceptedBerkeley EECS no longer requires or accepts GRE scores.
Georgia Tech, MS Computer ScienceOptional, considered if sentThe page suggests a score if you lack a related degree, have been out of school 10+ years, or worry about the strength of your file. Deadline 1 February.
UIUC Siebel School, MSRecommended, not requiredThe professional MCS does not require the GRE at all.
Stony Brook, Computer Science MSRequired for international applicantsRequired unless you hold a post-secondary degree from the US or Canada. Policy text still headed 2026; Fall 2027 MS deadline 15 March 2027.
Texas A&M, Industrial and Systems EngineeringRequired, no waiversOnly Texas A&M engineering graduates are exempt. A GMAT does not substitute.
USC Viterbi, master’s programmesNot requiredNot required for 2027 master’s applications; two Viterbi PhD programmes still require it. 15 December is the scholarship deadline.
UT Austin McCombs, MS programmes incl. Business AnalyticsOptionalGMAT and GRE optional for the Texas McCombs MS programmes.
Columbia Engineering, MS programmesNot yet announced for Fall 2027Site describes a GRE waiver for Fall 2026 only. Check again before you submit.

Notice how little the university name predicts. Stanford appears three times with two different answers. MIT appears three times with no requirement, yet MIT Sloan’s Evening MBA still requires a GRE or GMAT. The unit that decides is the department, and occasionally the specific degree.

Same University, Different Rules: The Stanford Example

Stanford is the best illustration of why ‘Does Stanford need the GRE?’ is the wrong question.

  • Computer Science MS: the department’s FAQ says GRE scores are not required and not considered from MS applicants. A score adds nothing.
  • Management Science and Engineering MS: an official GRE score is required of all applicants. The department allows a hardship exemption request, but adds that applicants without a quantitative degree or with qualifications below its usual MS averages may need a score to be competitive. It does not accept the GMAT instead and does not waive the GRE for work experience.
  • Statistics MS: the GRE General Test is required for both MS and PhD applicants. The MS deadline for Autumn 2027 entry is 7 January 2027.

An Indian student applying to Stanford CS and Stanford MS&E in the same cycle needs a GRE for one application and must not expect it to help the other. Shortlist by programme, then decide on the test.

‘Required for International Applicants’: The Clause Indian Students Miss

Some programmes have dropped the GRE for domestic students while keeping it for applicants with degrees from outside North America. Read quickly, the page looks GRE-optional. Read carefully, it is not optional for you.

Stony Brook’s Computer Science department is a clear example. Its admissions page says the GRE is not required for US citizens or permanent residents, and not required for any PhD applicant, but that an official GRE score is required for international MS applicants unless they hold a post-secondary degree from the United States or Canada. An Indian B.Tech graduate applying for the MS falls squarely inside that rule.

Maven Note: When you read a GRE policy, search the page for the words ‘international’, ‘domestic’, ‘U.S. degree’ and ‘permanent resident’. If the policy is split by applicant type, the line that applies to you is the one about holders of a degree from outside the US. Write that line, not the headline, into your shortlist.

The same habit helps with English tests, where Indian applicants are often treated differently from domestic ones. Our guide to the new TOEFL score scale shows how to read those requirements now that TOEFL reports on a 1 to 6 scale.

When an Optional GRE Still Helps an Indian Applicant

Optional means a programme will read your file without a score. It does not mean a good score is worthless. In our experience, a strong score does real work in five situations.

  1. Your CGPA is lower than the programme’s usual intake, or uneven. A committee looking at a 6.8 CGPA with two weak semesters has a question about readiness. A strong Quantitative Reasoning score is one of the few standardised answers you can give. We explain how committees weigh grades against the rest of a file in why a 9.0 CGPA gets rejected and a 7.2 gets admitted.
  2. You hold a three-year degree. A B.Sc., BCA or B.Com graduate applying to a US master’s already faces closer scrutiny of academic preparation at many universities. A good score is extra evidence that you can handle graduate coursework, though it does not change any university’s degree-equivalence rules.
  3. Your college is not well known to US committees. Reviewers can read an IIT or NIT transcript in their sleep. A strong student from a smaller affiliated college has more to prove, and a common yardstick helps.
  4. You are changing field or have been out of education for years. Georgia Tech says this directly: if you do not have a relevant degree, have been out of school for over 10 years, or are concerned about the strength of your application, providing GRE scores may help the committee.
  5. You want funding. Admission rules and funding rules are separate. Texas A&M’s Industrial and Systems Engineering department considers its top 15 per cent of admitted master’s students for a scholarship, and names standardised test scores among the selection factors. The University of Houston’s Economics department says GRE performance, with the Quantitative section heavily weighted, is part of how faculty nominate PhD applicants for fellowships.

For the full picture on money, our 2027 scholarship calendar lists the deadlines, many of which fall earlier than the final application date.

When You Can Safely Skip the GRE

A test that costs a significant sum and several weekends of preparation is not something to book out of habit. Skipping it is reasonable when all of the following are true.

  • Every programme on your final list marks the GRE as not required, optional or not accepted for Fall 2027, and none has an international-only requirement.
  • Your CGPA sits comfortably within the range those programmes usually admit, in a degree that matches the master’s you want.
  • You are not depending on a merit scholarship or fellowship that uses test scores.
  • You would be preparing in a rush. A weak score sent to an optional programme does more harm than no score at all.

If one programme on your list requires the GRE and the rest do not, the choice is not about the GRE. It is about whether that one programme is worth the test. Sometimes it is. Sometimes a different programme of similar quality, without the requirement, is the better use of your time.

What GRE Score Is Worth Sending to an Optional Programme

We will not give you a magic number, because no honest one exists across programmes. What we can give you is a method.

  1. Look for the programme’s own data. Some departments publish admission statistics or class profiles. Stanford MS&E, for example, links to its MS admission statistics from the same page that sets out its GRE rule. Compare your scores with the programme’s figures, not with a coaching centre’s chart.
  2. Read the Quantitative score first for STEM and analytics programmes. In engineering, computer science, data science and business analytics, Quant is the section committees use to judge readiness. A total score built on Verbal with a mediocre Quant rarely helps a technical application.
  3. Send a score that strengthens a weak point, not one that confirms a strong point. If your transcript already shows top marks in mathematics, a middling Quant score adds doubt rather than evidence.
  4. Use ScoreSelect. ETS lets you choose which test date to send, so a disappointing first attempt does not have to reach anyone.

One practical bonus: at some universities a GRE score does a second job. Texas A&M accepts a GRE Verbal score of at least 146, no more than five years old at entry, as one way to meet its English proficiency requirement for international applicants. Check whether your university offers anything similar before booking a separate English test.

The Last GRE Date for a 15 December Deadline

ETS says official GRE General Test scores are available in your ETS account 8 to 10 days after the test, and that score reports go to the institutions you chose on test day at the same time. Universities then need time to match scores to applications. Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science, for instance, asks applicants to test no later than 25 November 2026 for its 9 December deadline, because reportable scores can take two weeks to process. Our Fall 2027 US deadline map sets this against the rest of the application calendar.

Working back from a 15 December deadline with the same two-week buffer gives this plan:

DateWhat to doWhy
By 25 October 2026Fix your shortlist and record each programme’s GRE policy with the date checkedYou cannot decide on the test until you know which programmes need it
By 10 November 2026Take your first attemptLeaves room for a retake, since ETS requires 21 days between tests
About 18 to 20 NovemberOfficial scores in your ETS account8 to 10 days after the test
By 1 December 2026Last safe date for a retake, or for a first attempt if you have only one shotKeeps a two-week buffer before 15 December
After 1 DecemberTesting is a gambleScores may not be matched to your file in time, and some programmes will not review late scores
15 December 2026Application deadlineAlso USC Viterbi’s scholarship deadline for Fall master’s applicants

For 1 December deadlines, such as MIT Mechanical Engineering and MIT EECS, shift the whole plan back two weeks and sit the test by about 17 November. A few programmes are more flexible: Stanford MS&E says the GRE must be taken, not received, by the deadline. Do not assume yours is one of them unless its page says so.

GRE at Home or Test Centre: Check Before You Book

ETS offers the GRE General Test at test centres and at home, at the same fee and on the same score scale. For many Indian students the at-home option is convenient, especially outside the metros. But a programme can still refuse at-home scores.

Carnegie Mellon’s Computer Science Department says it does not accept GRE at Home scores unless the score date falls between 1 January 2020 and 31 May 2021, or between 1 August and 31 December 2022. In plain terms, an at-home test taken this year will not count for its MSCS. A student who books the convenient option without checking could find that the only score they have is unusable for their first-choice programme, with no time left to retest.

Maven Note: Before you book, search each programme page on your list for ‘at home’ or ‘home edition’. If even one programme you care about excludes at-home scores, book a test centre for that sitting. Centre slots in Bengaluru, Chennai and other cities fill faster in November, so book early.

Business Analytics and MBA Programmes: A Different Pattern

Business analytics sits between engineering and business, and its test rules reflect that. Many of these programmes accept either the GRE or the GMAT, and several have moved to optional.

  • MIT Sloan Master of Business Analytics: GMAT or GRE optional. The admissions FAQ encourages applicants who have a score to submit it as an additional data point.
  • UT Austin McCombs MS programmes, including Business Analytics: GMAT and GRE test scores are optional.
  • MIT Sloan Evening MBA: GRE or GMAT scores are required, and must be less than two years old, which is stricter than ETS’s five-year validity.

The MBA example carries a lesson for analytics applicants too. A programme’s own score-age rule can be tighter than the test maker’s. If you plan to reuse an older GRE score, check the programme’s validity rule before assuming five years.

Analytics programmes are among the more expensive one-year master’s degrees, so the funding point above applies with extra force. Our cost of a master’s abroad in 2027 comparison shows how a single year adds up.

GRE Cost and Rules for 2027 Applicants

ETS raised the GRE General Test fee with effect from 1 August 2026. Its fee page now lists $249 for test takers everywhere except China. The rupee amount for India is shown on the ETS India site at checkout, and several Indian test-prep sites report it as about ₹25,500, so confirm the exact figure, including any tax, when you register.

ItemCurrent rule (ETS)
Test fee$249 from 1 August 2026, including four free score reports chosen on test day
Additional score report$40 per recipient
Rescheduling or changing centre$55
Retake ruleOnce every 21 days, up to five times in any 12-month period
Score validityReportable for five years after the test date
Official score release8 to 10 days after the test, in your ETS account
Choosing scoresScoreSelect lets you send the test dates you choose

Two practical points. First, choose your four free recipients on test day; adding them later costs $40 each. Second, a score is valid for five years with ETS, but individual programmes can set shorter limits, as MIT Sloan does for its MBA.

How to Check Any Programme’s GRE Policy Yourself in Five Minutes

  1. Go to the department’s own admissions page, not a university-wide page and not a third-party list. Graduate schools often say ‘see your programme’ for test rules.
  2. Find the cycle label. Look for ‘Fall 2027’, ‘2027 applications’ or the application deadline for September 2027 entry. If the policy text names an older cycle, note that and recheck in November.
  3. Search the page for ‘international’, ‘U.S. degree’, ‘at home’ and ‘waive’. These words reveal the splits that matter to Indian applicants.
  4. Open the funding or scholarship page and search it for ‘GRE’ and ‘test scores’. Admission and funding rules are often different.
  5. Save a dated screenshot or PDF of the policy. If the page changes after you apply, you have a record of what it said, and you can email the graduate office with a precise question if anything is unclear.

The 30-second shortlist test

  1. Write each programme on your list in one column.
  2. Next to it, write Required, Recommended, Optional, Not accepted or Not yet announced, plus the date you checked.
  3. If any programme says Required or Recommended for you, book the GRE now.
  4. If all say Optional or Not accepted, decide using the five situations above, not out of habit.

Founder Perspective

“Every October a student walks in with a printed GRE-waiver list and a confident plan to skip the test. Half the time the list is a year old, and one programme on it has quietly changed its rule. The other half of the time the list is right, but the student is exactly the profile an optional score was meant for: a 6.9 CGPA, a three-year degree, or a switch from mechanical to data science.

We do not tell every student to take the GRE, and we do not tell every student to skip it. We open the department pages together, write down what each one says for this cycle, and then decide. That takes twenty minutes and saves a lot of money, and sometimes a whole intake.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the GRE required for Fall 2027 in the USA?

It depends on the programme. Of 15 US department pages we checked on 16 October 2026, four require the GRE from Indian applicants, two recommend it, six make it optional or do not require it, two do not accept scores, and one has not announced its Fall 2027 rule. Always check the programme’s own page for the current cycle.

Which US universities do not require the GRE for an MS in 2027?

Among the programmes we checked, Stanford Computer Science MS and UC Berkeley EECS do not accept GRE scores, and Georgia Tech MSCS, USC Viterbi master’s programmes, MIT Mechanical Engineering and MIT EECS do not require them. Other departments at the same universities may have different rules, so check each programme separately.

Should I submit my GRE score if it is optional?

Submit it if it strengthens a weak point in your file, such as a lower CGPA, a three-year degree, a less-known college or a change of field, or if you want merit funding. Keep it back if it is weak, especially a weak Quantitative score for a STEM or analytics programme. ScoreSelect lets you choose which test date to send.

What is the last date to take the GRE for a 15 December deadline?

Aim to test by 1 December 2026. ETS releases official scores 8 to 10 days after the test, and universities need time to match them to your file; Carnegie Mellon allows about two weeks. To keep the option of a retake, take your first attempt by 10 November, since ETS requires 21 days between tests.

Does Carnegie Mellon accept the GRE at home?

Not for its MS in Computer Science, except for at-home scores dated between 1 January 2020 and 31 May 2021 or between 1 August and 31 December 2022. The department strongly recommends the GRE for MSCS applicants and asks those without a score to explain why in their statement of purpose.

Is the GRE required only for international students at some universities?

Yes. Stony Brook’s Computer Science department does not require the GRE from US citizens, permanent residents or PhD applicants, but requires it from international MS applicants unless they hold a degree from the US or Canada. Indian graduates applying for that MS need a score.

Does a GRE score help with scholarships even if admission does not need it?

It can. Texas A&M’s Industrial and Systems Engineering department names standardised test scores among the factors for its master’s scholarships, and the University of Houston’s Economics department weighs GRE Quant heavily in nominating PhD fellows. Check each programme’s funding page, not just its admission page.

How much does the GRE cost in India in 2026?

ETS lists the GRE General Test fee as $249 from 1 August 2026, including four free score reports chosen on test day. The exact rupee amount, including any tax, is shown on the ETS India site when you register. Extra score reports cost $40 each and rescheduling costs $55.

How long is a GRE score valid?

ETS keeps GRE scores reportable for five years after the test date. Some programmes set a shorter limit; MIT Sloan’s Evening MBA, for example, only accepts GRE or GMAT scores less than two years old. Check your programme’s own rule before relying on an older score.

The Short Version

Is GRE required for Fall 2027? For some programmes yes, for many no, and for a few a score will not even be read. The rule belongs to the department, can differ for international applicants, and can change from one cycle to the next, as MIT Mechanical Engineering has shown. Check each programme’s own page, record the date, decide test by programme, and if you need the GRE, sit it by 10 November so a retake can still land before a 15 December deadline. An optional score is still worth sending when it answers a question your transcript raises, or when funding is on the line.

Not sure whether your shortlist needs the GRE?

Send us your list of programmes. We will check each department’s current Fall 2027 GRE policy, flag any international-only or at-home rules, and tell you plainly whether booking the test is worth it for your profile.
