The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) are two major tests that examine the English language proficiency of students from non-English speaking countries who are accepted by most universities abroad. Students aspiring to seek admission in universities abroad will be requested to take the IELTS and/or TOEFL tests.

While these tests may seem difficult, students are encouraged to prepare in advance to ensure that they best understand the format of the test so showcase their English proficiency. Good grades in the IELTS and TOEFL tests prove your competency in English and can help you secure admission into the university of your choice.

Let’s understand the difference between these tests, so that you know best how to prepare for them.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) was established in 1989 and is an international standardized test that examines the English abilities of non-speaking English students. This test is managed by the British Council, the Cambridge Assessment English and the IDP: IELTS Australia. Students who pass this test stand a favorable chance of securing admission into universities in New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland and Europe. Universities in the United States of America also accept these test scores.

Students must understand that there is no minimum score to pass this test. A test report form is issued to every student who takes the test. The results are categorized from scores with Band 1 and Band 7. Band 1 is classified as a non-taker and Band 7 as an expert user in the English language. The Band 0 is for those who did not attempt the test.  Test results are valid for two years.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is another major standardized English adeptness examination that tests your English language proficiency. This test is owned by the Educational Testing Service, a private and nonprofit organization that designs and manages tests. The Test of English as a Foreign Language is offered in over 4000 test centers across 165 countries.

The results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language are requested by over 10 000 universities and corporate companies in more than 130 countries. The test score is valid for two years only.

A study showed that most students find the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test a little easier than the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). However do not be discouraged. Exact preparedness will ensure that you score well in the chosen tests.

Every year thousands of employed individuals prepare to pursue their Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA), a coveted degree that enhances ones chances in career growth in the roles of managers and senior managers. Business schools around the world are inundated with applications from highly educated candidates with various backgrounds and degrees.

When you consider applying, you will be one among them. Worried that your application will just be a pile of paper on the admission selection desk? If so, worry no more. Building a winning MBA will help you secure admission into top business schools abroad and your dream of securing an overseas education can become a reality.  By following a few simple steps, you can show the admission selection team why you are the best candidate.

Your MBA resume is different from a typical resume. In a typical resume, you are expected to tell your potential employer why you are suitable for the prospective job. A MBA resume, however, must showcase how you were a valuable asset to your employer and how you used your theoretical knowledge to enhance your practical applications in the workplace using real experiences.

  1. Know your Business School

Research your choice of business school. Ensure that the MBA programme is aligned to your academic goals. Overseas business schools may defer from the business schools in India, careful research will help you to better understand their education system. It will help you to choose the university that offers you the best program style to study your MBA.

   2. Be creative in your resume

Your MBA resume must be creative. It may be difficult to sing your own praises, but you must be able to share your achievements, accomplishments and innovations in a simple, yet creative way. Keeping your resume short, the content must be concise, yet elaborate. As difficult as this may seem, but if written clearly, the selection committee will be able to choose you out of hundreds or thousands. Make sure that your writing is meticulous and your grammar and spelling is correct.

   3. Experiences and Accomplishments

Briefly share your experience in the workplace. Write about your experience while working on specific projects with your team. This would be an excellent opportunity to tell the selection committee about how you contributed to a project. Share how you worked on your weaknesses and overcame any challenges. Share the success of your project outcomes. You do not have to share your daily tasks on this resume. Demonstrate your abilities to drive projects successfully. Showcase your strong leadership capabilities with clearly defined examples.

   4. Be a real person in your MBA resume

Do not be fake, or superficial in your resume. Show the selection committee that you are a real person, who is valuable and who will make an excellent candidate for the program. Briefly share examples of any meaningful contributions that you have made to society through effective volunteering. Share the types of activities that you engage in; your extracurricular activities can tell the committee a great deal about you.

   5. Future Plans

The MBA selection committee often looks for candidates with a vision – a student who has clearly defined future goals. Share your short and long term goals in your resume. Ensure that your goals are career and development orientated. Clearly define your academic and future career path. This might take a great deal of introspection; however, outlining your career plan may boost your chances of admission. Demonstrate in your resume that you are a lifelong learner, always looking for ways to improve your skills and knowledge.

The MBA journey is a fulfilling one. Start with writing a winning resume to ensure that you secure admission in top business schools.

At Maven Consulting Services, our expert overseas education consultants can help you turn your academic dreams into realities. We provide professional academic coaching to ensure that students create creative resumes and better prepare them for selection interviews.

Indian students, those who are working or planning to work in the United States of America can welcome positive news regarding the H-1B Visa Program. The suggested changes by the previous American government left Indian students planning to work in the United States of America and current employees in despair.

Recently the US court overturned the program stating that the previous government’s reasons regarding the visa program was unreasonable and not justifiable.

The court overturned the last two changes to the program which would have hindered US based companies to hire foreign workers.

Currently the United States employs thousands of Indian nationals mainly in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics field.

This court ruling brings renewed hope for Indian students and professionals wanting to work abroad.

Prospective Indian employees seeking work in the United States can no longer fear rejection of getting placed in highly skilled careers.

The previous restriction made changes to the duration of the H-1B visa limiting the visa from three years to one year.

What is the H-1B Visa?
This visa is a non immigrant visa that allows American companies to employ foreign workers in highly specialized careers. The United States of America issues almost 85 000 visas annually.

Most of the H-1B visa holders are Indians.

The government of the UK has turned a new leaf by introducing a new Immigration system.

The new points-based immigration system in the UK will reward merit and skill above all else.

Inviting qualified scholars and experts from every field to make their careers in the UK.

How and Why it all started:

All this started with the end of England’s alliance with the European Union or after BREXIT.

BREXIT, the nickname used for the UK’s exit from the EU, took place on 31st of January 2020.

The decision was made on the premises that the cost of free immigration from European countries far outweighed the benefits of belonging to a unified monetary system under the European Union. The policy stated the intent to take back the control of the United Kingdom borders.

uk point-based immigration system

With the end of the free movement, a firm and fairer immigration system, that is called the ‘Point-based Immigration system’ will be implemented starting from the 1st of January 2021.

This system is designed to attract skilled and productive people from all over the world, regardless of their country.

The ultimate purpose of introducing the new immigration policy based on ability and skills is to create a high wage, high skilled, and highly productive economy.

How the UK’s points-based immigration system works:

The new system of immigration will work on the principle of awarding merit above all. You are qualified to apply and immigrate to the United Kingdom if you have the required skills and have proficiency in the English language.

As the name implies, the Point based immigration system works by awarding the points on set criteria.

Anyone who gets the required ‘points’ is eligible for immigration. These points are awarded based on having a secured job in the UK with an approved employer and speaking and understanding English.

The Points based system is simple, efficient, and effective. It is an employer-led system, allowing skilled workers from around the world to come to the UK.

uk immigrants

All the people who wish to apply for jobs in the UK will have to go through the Points-based migration system, regardless of EU status.

Both EU and non-EU applicants will have to prove that they have been given a job offer by the employers authorized to do so and that the job offer they have received is at the required skill level also that they can speak English.

In addition to this, there is a minimum salary threshold, which means that the applicant applying should have a job offer that pays a salary at least reaching the minimum threshold. Only then will the individual be able to apply for immigration.

However, suppose they do not have a job offer that pays less than the minimum threshold salary, which is £25,600.

In that case, they become ineligible unless they earn at least £20,480, and can prove that they have been given a job offer in a specific shortage occupation or have a Ph. D relevant to the job. These shortage occupations are designated by the MAC.

  • 1st category: first among the non-tradable points is a job offer from a certified employer in the UK, it carries 20 points.
  • Another 20 non-tradable points are awarded if the job is at the appropriate skill level of an individual.
  • The last 10 non-tradable points are awarded for English language proficiency.

To reach a total of 70 points, you must score 20 points from the tradable points category. These tradable points are awarded in the following way:

  • If a person has been offered a salary of £23,040 – £25,599, a total of 10 points are awarded.
  • If the salary offered is £25,600 or above, then a total of 20 points are awarded.
  • If the salary offered is less than £23,040, but no less than £20,480, a person will still be eligible if he fulfils other criteria. Because you can trade these points for higher qualifications and skillsets. These criteria and the points offered are:
  • having secured a job in a shortage occupation as assigned by MAC. It will amount to a total of 20 points.
  • Based on higher qualifications, that is if one has a D. in a subject relevant to the job. It will give them 10 points.
  • Based on higher qualification, a total of 20 points will be awarded if one has a D., relevant to the job, and in a STEM subject, that is in subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics.

The results:

The end of free movement will stop the influx of low-skilled and less productive workers from other European countries to the UK.

This has created more opportunities for British employers to hire highly skilled individuals worldwide to fill in the vacancies.

job with skills

There are also exciting new opportunities for workers from all over the world who could not immigrate to England despite their greater skills and proficiency because there just weren’t enough vacancies.

Now that the immigration system is treating everyone equally, merit will be upheld and highly rewarded.

The New points-based immigration system also offers opportunities for students; they can also get a visa to the UK if they get the required points.

Students who want to study in the UK will have to prove that they have gotten an offer from an authorized educational institution, have sufficient English proficiency, and support themselves during their studies in the United Kingdom.

Students studying abroad have been known to have worries and anxieties about several things that pressurize them and put their mental health at stake.

The major worries of students studying abroad have been varying over time, but due to the pandemic, they seem to be rising and altering with COVID-19 issues. Let us look at the list of some common worries and concerns of students studying abroad and how to overcome them so that you can take your abroad education experience to a different level.

1. Travel Issues:

The primary problem that worries 63% of the abroad students is traveling issues. Students are worried about not being able to go back home during the pandemic. In contrast, others are worried that they would not be able to reach back to their universities in time for classes as most countries have stopped their traveling process.

Travel issues

Visa authorities are now facing a block in their procedures while the universities show no concern for students’ visa problems that belong to abroad countries.

The solution is to keep yourself alert with all the rising news and COVID-19 updates to act accordingly and look for opportunities to help you out in such a crisis.

2. New Admissions:

The students have been facing problems with admissions, as most universities have closed their admissions due to the pandemic.

Universities of Britain have made it prominent that they might be continuing admissions only for the locals and would no longer accept any applications from the international students.

Meanwhile, other countries have completely shut off their admissions for the time being.

3. Online Classes:

Students are highly facing issues regarding online classes all over Asia. The lack of initiatives governments take in this regard has led to significant problems in the academic contributions of the students.

Online classes

Students mainly of biological background and higher education courses are entirely devastated due to the lack of internet and new educational resources. The student leagues of such countries are demanding incentives concerning their issues..

4. Healthcare:

With the rise of the virus and its dangers, the students are now facing a novel problem. 44% of the students are worried that they will be having issues with the healthcare department if they fall sick.

The COVID-19 has only made additions to such a problem by raising the chances of getting sick. Most universities do not provide Abroad Student Insurance, making it more difficult for the students to cover their expenditures.

Have you heard of free education in Germany for international students? But this is not the only advantage of studying in Germany. Let us explore some more secret benefits.

5. Discrimination:

A prevalent issue is that students face massive discrimination daily, whether from the institution’s authorities or other students. They are given opportunities based on discriminative behavior and implicit bias.

international student discrimination

Not long ago, a University in Estonia was banned based on discriminative behavior amongst students. 38% of students from abroad are worried about more discriminative behavior affecting their lives.

Overcoming a mass issue may not be as easy as personal comprehension, but the students must speak up for such situations so that required action can be taken.

6. Language Difficulties:

The students studying abroad have had the most common problem since the start of abroad opportunities. Language has been a barrier to those struggling with studies abroad, mainly because learning a new language and their course work is too much of a burden.

Language difficulties

Coping up with the new culture and relatively new lifestyle, it becomes too much for a student to maintain a schedule of learning a completely new language.

The best way of overcoming language problems is NOT to learn the complete language at first, it is essential to learn important phrases such as “Help” “What is the direction to.” “Which way is…” etc. to be able to communicate essential things that you would regularly need to.

7. Money:

Though there are many scholarships and free institutes abroad, students worry about their daily expenses and everyday money requirements. Some countries even provide an earn and learn scheme for students to work as they continue their studies.

Money

The only way to overcome this issue is by conducting proper research. There is an abundance of opportunities to solve financial problems abroad.

Still, they can only be known if the students research before enrolling in any institute whether the institute provides enough financial opportunities.

8. Safety and Security concerns:

The lack of relations between countries and the fact that students are far from their families makes it difficult to maintain safety.

The students are entirely left on their own, and their security is put at stake. This is a vast problem linked to the issue that they are not familiar with the culture and locations of the country.

The solutions to the issue are that the student should make sure that someone knows where they are; it is best to keep the company of locals.

Emergency phone numbers and local contacts should be kept at all times. One should be aware of the circumstances, and local news is to remain alert.

9. Worries of Missing out:

Students at a young age are majorly concerned with adaptation issues. Their reliability and self-confidence is extremely low. Students are concerned that they miss out on events, family time, and friends’ gatherings back home.

abroad students fear of safety

In reality, moving abroad for studies is an option that can facilitate your life with new events, new people, and a completely new atmosphere.

Not only is it a break from a regular old robotic life, but the novel experiences also bring about changes and a greater view of life.

10. Homesickness:

It is not a myth but a harsh reality that students studying abroad have to go through on a routine basis. Missing home and feeling lonely at times is completely natural.

Homesickness

It is best to reach out to people, make connections, and start reading about your situation to escalate to a better level of understanding.

Meanwhile, keeping a connection back home, talking it out with friends, and letting others know of your situation brings immense support and help!

Living and studying away from home can be a fulfilling dream for so many students. Living in a new country is an excellent opportunity to learn a new language, experience new cultures and indulge in foods that are different to us.

However, studying abroad can bring several challenges too! That is why making good friends abroad in a new city can be beneficial to you.

How to make friends living abroad?

Unlike young children, youth and adults find it more challenging to make friends with each other. Most youth and adults feel that making a new friend might be a hindrance to the new friend.

Perhaps that friend already has friends, and they do not need new friends, or maybe the new friend might feel you are a burden to them; perhaps there is a cultural difference. Whatever the circumstances may be, making new friends can be overwhelming.

So here are some tried and tested ways on how to make friends while living abroad:

1. Read about the place

Every place has its own unique history, arts and culture. So even before moving to the new place, you can read up about that place’s history and notable historical and current personalities, the arts and popular culture known to people.

You can also look up the language, if it’s not one that you’re familiar with and learn basic phrases in that language as it can be the best way to bond with the people there.

2. Talk to people in your class

To make friends while studying abroad, don’t be a silent student. On your first day, do not be afraid to greet classmates and introduce yourself to them.

Most times, local people are fascinated with people from abroad. Share your intentions of studying in the new place and your desire to meet new people.

You will be bound to find new friends who have similar tastes to you.

3. Sign up for extracurricular activities

Attending activities outside your set classroom schedule can help you to find friends. Attend events and socials that are of interest to you.

extracurricular activities in abroad

During those socials, get to know the people who are attending. Sit with others and don’t be afraid to ask to join a group of people when finding a seat.

4. Read the university bulletin board

Do not ignore the university bulletin board! On these boards, you will find valuable information about events that are happening in and around the university.

You do not have to attend every single event that the university offers; however, you can pick the ones that are best suited for you. You can find new friends at cultural or sporting events.

5. Read your apartment bulletin board and leaflets

Do not ignore those leaflets pasted on bulletin boards in your housing complex. These leaflets, most times, advertised local events and people from your apartment building are most likely to attend these events. You can get to meet new people at these social gatherings.

6. Sign up for an exercise class

Exercise classes such as yoga or aerobics, even the local gym can be a great place for meeting new friends.

Try something new and while at these places, be sure to get to know those around you. Speak to the person on the treadmill next to you, or on the next yoga mat.

exercise class in abroad

Greet people in the change room and don’t be afraid to tell people that you are new around here. You will be surprised that being new in a new place can help you find great friends.

7. Shop at the local convenience store

Buy your general supplies from the nearest local convenience store. Speak to the shop keeper or shop owner.

At these stores, you are most likely to bump into people from your own neighbourhood. You can easily talk to local people who can later become meaningful friends.

8. Volunteer at a local charity

Offering your time and service to a local charity is a great initiative, especially when you are new in the area. In these places, you can meet new people and make new friends.

9. Visit the local park or sports centre

Go for a walk or job in nature at the local park or visit your local sports centre. In these places, you will find people from the same neighbourhood.

girl jogging in local park

Once again, talk to people and share your interests while learning about their interests.

10. Attend your religious gathering in the new city

If you are religious, find the local place of worship in the area and visit. Faith and religion bring people together, and this is a great place to meet friends of the same faith or religion as you are.

11. Talk to people, anywhere, everywhere

Without being too clingy or over-talkative, talk to people wherever you go. This could mean a simple hello to the shopkeeper, or the bus driver; it could mean a simple, ‘have a nice day’ to your new neighbour. The secret of making good friends is in saying hello.

We understand that living overseas can be overwhelming. If you know of people that once lived in that same city, connect with him and ask them for advice.

However, the best way to make foreign friends is to be genuinely interested in people. Say hello with care and when you stop to ask someone how they are doing, pause to listen to their response.

Making friends abroad can be easy for some people and quite daunting for others. However, whatever your personality type, if you are open to meeting new people and developing meaningful friendships, you will find good friends that can enrich your life in a new city.

With caution, we ask you to be careful of all people in a new city, be wise in choosing friends. Avoid falling into the trap of meaningless friendships that can distract you from the main goal that led you to the new city. Take caution in the places you choose to visit with friends and be careful of drug and substance abuse.

The friends you make abroad will become your lifetime family if you build a momentous friendship that can transcend through the years. Make friends that are interested in you and your personal developments.

As C.S. Lewis so profoundly said, “Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another: ‘What! You too? I thought I was the only one.”

Hope you find those “You too” friends.
