Studying abroad is a competitive but immensely praised step towards one’s higher education, and every student must go through many exams. It’s not enough to just pass it. You must try your best to get excellent results. So it is important to have a clear understanding of the exam you are about to face before you start preparing for the exam.

What should I take to study abroad: English

1. TOEFL test (TOEFL): Sponsored by the U.S. Educational Testing Service, TOEFL scores are recognized in schools around the world, such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, and other countries and regions. For students who want to apply to American colleges and universities, it is recommended to take the TOEFL test

2. IELTS test (IELTS): IELTS test by the British Council, the Cambridge University Local Examinations Committee and the Australian Education Agency co-organized international English proficiency test, mainly recognized by Commonwealth countries (UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, etc.), and now many American universities have also recognized IELTS test scores.

What should I take for studying abroad: standardized examination.

If you want to apply for undergraduate or graduate students in the United States, and Canada, in addition to TOEFL or IELTS scores, you also need to submit such as GRE, GMAT, and LSAT to the school. , SAT, ACT, and other exam results.

1. The GRE examination is an entrance examination for graduate students in the United States. It is applicable to postgraduate examinations in various disciplines and majors except law (requires LSAT scores) and business (requires GMAT scores). It is an important basis for American graduate schools to select and train senior research talents. It is also one of the important reference conditions for graduate schools to decide whether to provide scholarship funding to applicants.

2. GMAT exam, a test commissioned by the American Educational Testing Service Centre by the Admission Examination Committee of the American Business School Institute. Universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other countries use GMAT scores to assess whether applicants are suitable for postgraduate studies in business, economics, and management majors to decide whether to be admitted or not.

3. The LSAT examination is an admission qualification examination set up by the law school of the Admission Committee of the United States Law School. Most of these law schools are located in all states of the United States, and a few in Canada. Almost all law schools require applicants to submit LSAT scores, which is a very important measure as one of the main conditions for law schools to evaluate applicants.

Standardized examination in applications for studying abroad

Of course, these three categories are not clearly different from each other. In many cases, vocabulary, reading, and logical reasoning. Ability is the basic ability required for all kinds of examinations, but the degree of involvement is different. According to the above two dimensions, we can include the standardized examination in the application for studying abroad in the following table:

Standardized examinations may be involved when applying for universities in English-speaking countries represented by the United States and the United Kingdom. The examinations required by other countries and regions, such as Europe and Japan, are different, although they are roughly similar in the dimensions of classification. For applicants from different schools and backgrounds, the standardized examinations that need to participate in are actually different.

For ordinary mainland American applicants, TOEFL and SAT/ACT are required; for graduate applicants, TOEFL and GRE are required. Of course, for most universities in the United Kingdom and the United States, TOEFL and IELTS results can be replaced by each other, and applicants only need to participate in one of them. Similarly, for undergraduate applicants in the United States, the SAT and ACT exams can be replaced by each other.

In addition, GMAT is a business department. The effectiveness of the examination required by applicants for postgraduate programs is similar to that of the GRE; LSAT is the entrance examination of the law school, which will be used as a reference for the application to the law school. Next, we will give an introduction to the various exams.

Language class Exam

The language test tests the students’ language ability. Taking TOEFL as an example, the test is divided into four sections: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Each section has 30 points, with a total score of 120 points, which is valid for 2 years. The composition of the IELTS and TOEFL tests is similar. The main difference is that the IELTS oral test needs to communicate face to face with the examiner, while TOEFL is a computer test. At the same time, there are also differences in policies for different exams.

For example, TOEFL has appeared a scoring policy in recent years, that is, students can choose a better combination of scores in each section after multiple exams to submit the results. The significance of the language examination is to prove that non-native English students have considerable English proficiency. The preparation skills are not detailed here for the time being, but in fact, as long as the ability passes, the examination results will be completed.

Ability Examination

The ability test tests students’ academic ability, reading, grammar, mathematics, writing, etc. The SAT required for undergraduate application and the GRE required for postgraduate application are very similar in the composition of the examination. SAT sets up a language section with a total score of 800 points, which consists of reading and grammar. GRE also has a language section with a total score of 170 points. Its name is verbal reasoning, which focuses on the examination of students’ vocabulary and reading reasoning ability. Similarly, the SAT sets an 800-point mathematical plate, and the GRE also has a quantitate reasoning plate with a total score of 170 points. SAT has a writing section with a total score of 24 points, and GRE also has a writing section with a total score of 7 points. This kind of examination examines logical reasoning and grammar knowledge in addition to general vocabulary and reading ability. For Chinese students, the difficulty usually lies in Chinese and writing. The preparation for this kind of exam is, on the one hand, it is the same as the language category, and it is easy to complete when it reaches the ability. Second, it is necessary to be necessary to familiarise yourself with the question types and ideas of the exam through OG or exercises, and thirdly, it may need to make some vocabulary reserves for the exam (especially GRE).

Knowledge exam

The knowledge examination examines the degree of a student’s mastery of knowledge in a certain subject area. Whether it is undergraduate or postgraduate applications, most schools do not require such examinations (except for individual schools). The significance of students’ participation in such examinations is generally to provide additional and more reliable proof of their academic strength in specific subject areas. Of course, if you participate in the exam with enough subjects and excellent grades, it can also be used as strong proof of students’ learning ability.
