The Short Answer
What is the application deadline for the Germany summer semester 2027?
For the Germany summer semester 2027, most public universities close applications on 15 January 2027, but that is the last day, not the safe day. uni-assist asks you to apply at least eight weeks earlier, which means around 20 November 2026, and some programmes closed for non-EU applicants as early as 1 September or 30 November 2026.
If you missed the October intake, or simply do not want to wait a full year, the April intake in Germany looks like the obvious next door. Plenty of students in Bengaluru are asking us the same thing this month: is the Germany summer semester 2027 still open, and is it worth it?
The honest answer is yes for some students and no for others, and the line between them is sharper this year than it has ever been. This guide covers the Germany summer semester 2027 step by step: the real deadline, how the VPD works, when classes start, what the blocked account will need, and how the new dMAT changes the picture. For the wider picture of studying in Germany, start with our Study in Germany guide.
It matters now because mid-October is the last comfortable point to start. Every step in this process runs on its own clock, and the clocks only line up if you begin this month.
For most public universities that admit international students in summer, the closing date is 15 January 2027. uni-assist, the service many German universities use to check foreign certificates, says on its deadlines and processing time page that the deadline is often 15 January for courses starting in the summer semester and often 15 July for the winter semester.
The word that matters there is often. Deadlines are set by each university, sometimes by each programme, and the ones that apply to non-EU applicants can be much earlier. Three examples, all checked on the universities’ own pages:
| University | Programme type | Summer 2027 deadline for non-EU applicants |
|---|---|---|
| RWTH Aachen | Master’s with open admission | 1 September 2026 (already closed) |
| RWTH Aachen | Master’s with restricted admission (NC) | 15 January 2027 |
| TU Munich (TUM) | Physics master’s programmes | Application window 1 September to 30 November 2026 |
| University of Stuttgart | Certain German-taught master’s programmes | 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027 |
| University of Stuttgart | English-taught master’s programmes | Separate, programme-specific deadlines |
Sources: RWTH Aachen, TUM Physics, University of Stuttgart. RWTH states plainly that these are final deadlines and that late applications will not be considered.
Maven Note: If a counsellor, a website or a WhatsApp group tells you the German summer deadline is 15 January, the statement is true and still dangerous. Look up every programme on your list on the university’s own admissions page. The date that applies to you is the one written for applicants with a foreign degree, not the one on a general calendar.
uni-assist does not just accept your documents and forward them. It evaluates them first. Its own guidance is to apply at least eight weeks before the deadline expires, so that there is time to tell you about missing documents and for you to fix them.
Count eight weeks back from 15 January 2027 and you land on 20 November 2026. That is the working deadline we give every student aiming for the Germany summer semester 2027.
The processing times on the same page explain why. uni-assist usually takes four to six weeks from the day it receives your online application. For applicants from Asia, its current regional estimate is four to five weeks, and it adds that individual cases can take longer. Applications are handled in order of arrival, so a December rush pushes everyone back.
| Date | What it means |
|---|---|
| Mid-October 2026 | Comfortable start: documents, APS, shortlist |
| 20 November 2026 | Working deadline for uni-assist submissions (8 weeks before 15 January) |
| 30 November 2026 | Some programmes close, for example TUM Physics |
| Late December 2026 | Evaluation results for November submissions usually arrive |
| 15 January 2027 | Final closing date at most public universities |
If you apply in the first week of January, you are relying on uni-assist finishing in about a week and on nothing being missing from your file. Some students get lucky. Planning on luck is how good applicants lose a semester.
A VPD, or Vorprüfungsdokumentation, is a preliminary review document. Some universities do not want your full application to go through uni-assist. Instead, they ask uni-assist to evaluate your foreign certificates and issue a VPD, which you then send to the university yourself, alongside the university’s own application.
The key points from uni-assist’s VPD guidance:
This is where students get caught. They see 15 January on the university page, apply for the VPD on 5 January, and receive it on 8 February. The university deadline has passed and the VPD is useless for the Germany summer semester 2027.
Maven Note: If a programme needs a VPD, treat the VPD application as the real deadline and the university application as a formality that follows it. Apply for the VPD in October or the first half of November.
German summer semesters do not all start on the same day, and the difference matters when you are counting weeks for the visa.
| Institution | Semester starts | Lectures start |
|---|---|---|
| University of Stuttgart | 1 April 2027 | Monday 12 April 2027 |
| RheinMain University of Applied Sciences | 1 April 2027 | 12 April 2027 |
| TU Munich | 1 April 2027 | Check your programme |
| Landshut University of Applied Sciences | 15 March 2027 | 15 March 2027 |
Sources: University of Stuttgart semester dates, HAW Landshut summer semester 2027 dates, and the RheinMain and TUM semester calendars. Universities generally start lectures in mid-April, while many universities of applied sciences (Hochschulen) start in mid-March, almost four weeks earlier.
Most universities also run orientation weeks and enrolment deadlines before lectures begin. In practice, you want to land in Germany one to two weeks before the first lecture, which means late March for a university and late February or early March for many applied sciences institutions.
Here is the sequence we use with students, built backwards from a mid-April lecture start. If your programme starts in mid-March, move every date from February onwards about four weeks earlier.
| When | Step | Why it cannot wait |
|---|---|---|
| October 2026 | Confirm each programme admits non-EU students in summer. Start or complete APS. Check whether the dMAT applies to you. | APS and dMAT run on their own timelines and gate everything else |
| By 20 November 2026 | Submit uni-assist applications and VPD requests | Eight-week buffer recommended by uni-assist |
| December 2026 | Fix any document requests. Send VPDs to universities. Complete direct applications. | Missing documents are the most common cause of delay |
| 15 January 2027 | Final application deadline at most public universities | Late applications are not considered |
| January 2027 | Keep blocked account funds ready. Watch the visa appointment portal. | You will have weeks, not months, once an offer arrives |
| February to early March 2027 | Admission letters arrive. Open and fund the blocked account at once. Book the visa appointment. | Visa processing time is not fixed |
| March 2027 | Visa decision. Book flights and temporary housing. | Accommodation in German cities is tight |
| Late March to early April 2027 | Travel, enrol, register your address, attend orientation | Lectures at most universities start 12 April |
The squeeze is in the middle. Admission decisions for a 15 January deadline often arrive in February or March, and the dates vary by university. That can leave four to six weeks for the blocked account, the visa appointment, the visa decision and travel. Students who have the money ready and their documents in order before the offer arrives get through. Students who start arranging funds after the offer often do not.
This is the question that decides whether the April intake in Germany is even possible for a large group of Indian applicants, and very few guides have caught up with it.
The Germany summer semester 2027 is the first intake covered by the new digital Master Test. According to APS India’s June 2026 leaflet, the requirement applies when your application relates to the summer semester 2027 intake or a later one, and your previous degree falls in an affected field. The fields listed for the introductory phase are:
The leaflet is clear on timing: the dMAT certificate must be submitted together with your APS application documents. The dMAT FAQ for India adds that applicants who registered with APS and sent their documents on or after 29 June 2026 need the certificate if their degree is in an affected field. Anyone who already holds an APS certificate does not need to take the dMAT for that completed procedure.
Now look at the test calendar. The first India sitting was on 26 September 2026. Registration closed on 15 September, and results and certificates were scheduled for 12 October 2026. The FAQ says the next test date is planned for the first quarter of 2027, and that date had not been published when we checked on 14 October 2026.
Put those facts together and the consequence is plain:
| Your situation | What it means for April 2027 |
|---|---|
| Degree outside the affected fields | dMAT does not apply. April is possible if APS is done in time. |
| Already hold an APS certificate | No dMAT needed for that procedure. April is possible. |
| Affected field, sat the 26 September 2026 dMAT | Certificates were scheduled for 12 October. Submit yours with your APS documents immediately. April is tight but possible. |
| Affected field, no dMAT yet, APS not started before 29 June 2026 | Next test is planned for early 2027. Your APS certificate cannot be completed before then. April 2027 is very unlikely. Plan for Winter 2027/28. |
Two facts help. The dMAT certificate is generally valid indefinitely, and you can retake the test as often as you wish. The FAQ does not name a minimum passing score for APS. If you are in the last row, the best use of the next few months is to prepare well for the early-2027 sitting and aim at a stronger winter application. Our dMAT or APS guide explains the test itself, the fee and what a weak score does and does not block.
Maven Note: APS India stated on 16 March 2026 that it will not keep an application open while you wait for results or later marksheets. If you are still in your final year, your certificate reflects what you have completed when your file is processed. Do not post your APS documents half-ready in the hope of topping them up later.
The APS verification fee itself is ₹18,000, non-refundable once paid. APS India does not publish a guaranteed processing time, and its news page carries no current estimate. Build in several weeks, more in January and February when summer and winter applicants overlap.
For anyone starting in the Germany summer semester 2027, the figure confirmed today is €11,904 for the first year, released at no more than €992 a month. The German Missions in India student visa page states this amount and says the €992 monthly limit has applied since 1 September 2024.
Here is the part almost nobody is telling Indian families. The Federal Foreign Office explains that the amount is based on the maximum rates of support received by German students under BAföG, the national student grant. That grant is being changed right now.
If the bill passes as drafted and the visa amount follows the new maximum rate, as it has in earlier rounds, the monthly figure would rise by €60. That would mean about €1,052 a month, or €12,624 a year. This is our own arithmetic, not an official figure. The German missions have announced no new amount, and they have not said when any change would apply to visa applications.
| Scenario | Monthly | Yearly | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Current requirement | €992 | €11,904 | Confirmed by German Missions in India |
| If the €440 housing allowance passes and is applied to visas | about €1,052 | about €12,624 | Not announced. Our calculation only |
Maven Note: Do not wait for Berlin. If you are funding the account in January or February 2027, check the German Missions in India page in the week you transfer money, and keep a margin of €700 to €800 available so you can top up without delay. A blocked account confirmation that is €720 short is not a minor issue at a visa counter. It is a missing document.
Two more money points from the same official page. If your university charges tuition, the visa file needs proof that the first two semesters are covered, through a payment confirmation, a loan, or an extra unblocked deposit in the blocked account. And the national visa fee is €75, payable in rupees. For the full cost picture across countries, see our cost of a master’s abroad comparison, and for loans and the TCS on foreign remittances, our 2027 education loan guide.
For Indian applicants, national visa appointments, including student visas, are booked through the appointment portal of VFS Global, the external service provider used by the German missions. The German Missions in India booking page sets out the steps:
The German missions do not publish a fixed processing time for student visas, and appointment availability changes week to week. For a Germany summer semester 2027 start, that uncertainty is the whole problem. Start watching the portal in January, register for the waitlist where it is offered, and keep every document ready so you can take the first suitable slot after your admission letter arrives.
The official checklist also expects travel health insurance from your arrival until your university enrolment, usually around three months, two identical application sets, and original certificates. Do not staple anything.
Maven Note: The visa counter checks consistency. The name, degree and dates on your APS certificate, admission letter, blocked account confirmation and passport must match exactly. A spelling difference in a parent’s name or a degree title can cost you a second appointment, and in an April timeline you rarely have time for one.
Fewer than in winter, and noticeably fewer for English-taught master’s degrees. The University of Stuttgart says on its application deadlines page that most master’s programmes start in the winter semester, and that certain programmes also start in spring. That pattern is common across German public universities.
What this means in practice:
For that last point, read our guide on checking whether a German private university will still exist when you land. A flexible deadline is not a reason to choose a university.
Choosing April over October is not just a matter of starting six months earlier. These are the trade-offs we walk families through.
Your shortlist will be shorter. If your dream programme is winter-only, April means settling for your second or third choice to save six months. Sometimes that is a good trade. Often it is not.
Many master’s programmes are designed around a winter start. Starting in summer can mean taking advanced modules before foundational ones, or waiting a semester for a core course. Ask the programme coordinator, in writing, how summer starters are scheduled.
Student halls run waiting lists all year. Summer arrivals often face slightly less competition than the October rush, but you also have far less time to search because offers arrive late. Plan for temporary accommodation for your first weeks.
Working student jobs are available all year. A summer start does, however, put your first semester break in August and September, which is a useful window for internships once you have settled in.
This is the biggest risk. A winter intake usually leaves more room between offer and travel. April often leaves four to six weeks. Any delay in funds, appointments or documents moves you to the next semester.
April 2027 is worth it if you can tick every box in the left column. If any item on the right applies to you, Winter Semester 2027/28 is the better plan, and our Winter Semester 2027 guide sets out that timeline.
| April 2027 makes sense if | Wait for October 2027 if |
|---|---|
| Your target programme admits non-EU students in summer | Your preferred programmes are winter-only |
| You can submit to uni-assist by about 20 November 2026 | You cannot finish documents before December |
| Your APS certificate is done, or will be soon, and the dMAT does not block you | You are in a dMAT field without a certificate yet |
| Blocked account funds are ready before your offer arrives | Funds depend on a loan that is not yet sanctioned |
| You have completed your degree, or hold final marksheets | You are waiting for final results from your university |
| You are comfortable arriving with a tight four-to-six-week window | You would rather arrive prepared than arrive early |
If April does not work and you want to start sooner than October, other countries such as the UK, US, Canada, Ireland and Australia still run January and February intakes. Ask us to compare them against your profile.
Once you land, you will register your address and apply for a residence permit at the local foreigners’ office (Ausländerbehörde). Book that appointment as early as your city allows.
Founder Perspective
“Every year a few students come to us in January wanting April, with the money still being arranged and the APS file not yet posted. We tell them the truth: the German system is not slow, it is sequential. APS, then evaluation, then admission, then funds, then visa, and none of those steps can be rushed by being anxious.
This year there is an extra gate. If you are an engineering or commerce graduate without a dMAT certificate, April 2027 is very unlikely, and that is not a failure. Spend the time on a strong dMAT score and a better shortlist for October. The students who do well in Germany are rarely the ones who arrived first. They are the ones who arrived with their papers, their money and their plan in order.”

At most public universities it is 15 January 2027, but some programmes close earlier for non-EU applicants, for example 30 November 2026 for TUM’s physics master’s programmes. uni-assist recommends applying at least eight weeks before the deadline, so aim to submit by about 20 November 2026.
Not if you start now. Mid-October gives enough time to complete APS and submit to uni-assist by about 20 November 2026. If you are a dMAT-affected applicant without a dMAT certificate, April 2027 is very unlikely and the winter semester 2027/28 is the realistic target.
uni-assist says evaluation usually takes four to six weeks from receipt of your online application, with a current estimate of four to five weeks for applicants from Asia. Individual cases can take longer, which is why it advises applying at least eight weeks before the deadline.
A VPD is a preliminary review document that uni-assist issues after evaluating your foreign certificates. Some universities require it with their own application. It appears in your My assist account only after evaluation, and you must send it to the university before its deadline, so apply in October or early November.
Yes, if you are applying for a master’s, your previous degree is in engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, business or management, and you registered with APS on or after 29 June 2026. The dMAT certificate must be submitted together with your APS documents.
The first sitting was on 26 September 2026, with results scheduled for 12 October 2026. The dMAT FAQ says the next test date is planned for the first quarter of 2027. The exact date had not been published as of 14 October 2026.
The confirmed requirement is 11,904 euros for the first year, with a monthly release of 992 euros. A BAföG bill before the Bundestag would raise the housing allowance from summer semester 2027. If the visa amount follows, it could rise to about 12,624 euros a year, but no new figure has been announced.
Most universities start the semester on 1 April 2027, with lectures from around 12 April 2027. Many universities of applied sciences start earlier, for example 15 March 2027 at Landshut. Check your own university’s semester calendar.
Through the VFS Global appointment portal used by the German missions. Select National Visa, Student Visa, and the sub-category for students with an APS certificate. If no slots are available, the portal may offer a waitlist that emails you when slots open.
It is worth it if your programme admits non-EU students in summer, your APS and dMAT position is clear, your funds are ready and you can apply by late November. If your preferred programmes are winter-only or you are still waiting for documents, October 2027 is the better choice.
The Germany summer semester 2027 deadline is usually 15 January 2027, but your working deadline is about 20 November 2026, because uni-assist needs four to six weeks and asks for an eight-week buffer. Summer 2027 is also the first intake that needs a dMAT certificate for engineering, commerce and management graduates, and the next test is not until early 2027. Plan for at least €11,904 in the blocked account, with a margin in case the figure rises. If your programme, papers and money are ready, April works. If not, October is the smarter start.
Send us your shortlist, your degree details and your APS status. We will check every programme’s summer deadline, tell you whether the dMAT affects you, and map a realistic timeline for April or October. Maven Consulting Services, Bengaluru, has guided more than 10,000 students across 700-plus university partners in 27 countries, with a 99.8 per cent visa success rate and a commission-free model, so our advice follows your interests, not a university’s.
