Last verified: 15 October 2026, against GOV.UK, the US State Department’s visa wait-time table, IRCC, the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi, Ireland’s Immigration Service Delivery, and the admissions pages of the universities named below. University deadlines move, and seats close early when courses fill, so we update this page with the date whenever a figure changes.

The Short Answer
Which countries have a January 2027 intake for Indian students?
Five are still realistic: the UK (most postgraduate deadlines from 30 October to late November), Australia for February (Sydney’s postgraduate deadline is 18 December), Ireland (a narrow set of courses, closing October to early December), the US (spring deadlines mostly closed by early November, with visa slots the real limit) and Canada (colleges only, and the study permit must be filed before 31 December).
It is mid-October, and the question in our Bengaluru offices has changed. In August students asked which university to pick for September 2027. Now a steady stream of families ask something more urgent: is it too late for January?
For most students, it is not. But the honest answer depends far less on the university’s deadline than on the visa clock behind it. This guide looks at the January 2027 intake for Indian students in each of the five countries that still run one, and for each it sets out the same five things: which programmes start in January or February, the typical final deadline, how long the visa takes from India, when your funds have to be in place, and the honest downside of a mid-year start.
It matters now because several of these windows shut within the next six weeks, and two of them shut for reasons that have nothing to do with admissions: US interview slots and Canada’s 31 December attestation letter cut-off. If you are only weighing the UK, our Study in the UK guide is the place to start.
Five countries still run a realistic January 2027 intake, or a February start, for an Indian applicant who moves this month. They are not equally open, and they do not close for the same reasons. The table compares them on the five points that decide whether you can actually be in a classroom by February.
| Country | Who runs a Jan/Feb start | Typical final deadline | Visa lead time from India | Funds proof timing | Honest downside |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UK | Many postgraduate taught courses; fewer undergraduate | 30 October to late November 2026; a few into January | About 3 weeks after biometrics | Money held 28 days in a row, ending within 31 days of the visa application | 18-month Graduate Route, not 2 years |
| Australia (February) | Most universities, Semester 1 or Term 1 | Mid-October to 18 December 2026 | Several weeks; no reliable fixed figure for India | Evidence of AUD 29,710 for 12 months’ living costs, plus tuition and travel | Genuine Student scrutiny is high; family rules have tightened |
| Ireland | Selected master’s at DCU, NCI, ATU, DBS, Griffith and a few others | 2 October to early December 2026 | 4 to 8 weeks after the embassy receives the file | Six months of statements showing €10,000; at least €6,000 of fees paid first | Very few courses; most big universities are September-only |
| USA (spring) | Many master’s programmes, mostly at public universities | Mostly closed between 15 October and 6 November 2026 | Interview wait 2 weeks to 2.5 months, by city | Funds shown to the university for the I-20, then at the interview | Slot availability, not admission, decides it |
| Canada (winter) | Colleges; few university programmes still open | Rolling at colleges until seats fill; most universities closed | About 6 weeks (IRCC, early October 2026) | CAD 23,448 for living costs plus first-year tuition and travel | 2026 PAL must be used before 31 December |
Read the last column as carefully as the deadline column. In every country, the January 2027 intake is a real option. In none of them is it an easier route than September.
A university deadline tells you the last day it will accept an application. It does not tell you whether there is enough time after that to receive an offer, meet conditions, pay a deposit, receive a CAS, I-20, CoE or letter of acceptance, arrange funds, sit a visa appointment and fly. For the January 2027 intake, those steps are compressed into eight to ten weeks.
So the useful way to plan is backwards from the first day of class. Take the start date, subtract travel and arrival time, subtract the visa decision time, subtract the funds rule, and subtract the time the university needs to issue its document. Whatever date you land on is your real deadline. In most of the cases below it is several weeks earlier than the published one.
Maven Note: Universities often accept applications after the date by which they can realistically issue a visa document. An offer that arrives after the CAS or I-20 cut-off is usually deferred to the next intake, not honoured in January. Always ask for the document deadline, not just the application deadline.
The UK offers the widest choice in the January 2027 intake, mostly in taught master’s programmes in business, computing, data, engineering management and health. Each university sets its own dates, and they range further apart than most students expect. These are three published January 2027 calendars.
| University | Application deadline | Other dates that matter | Course start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liverpool John Moores University | 30 October 2026 | Deposit 23 November; CAS issuing deadline 30 November | 11 January 2027 |
| University of Kent | 27 November 2026 (postgraduate taught) | Funds into your bank account by 16 November; bank-transfer deposit 23 November | 11 January 2027 |
| Queen Mary University of London | 11 January 2027 for overseas Student route applicants | January starts mainly in medicine, dentistry and life sciences | Late January 2027 |
Kent’s January 2027 intake calendar shows the hidden deadline most clearly. Its application deadline is 27 November, but its deadline for transferring funds is 16 November. That is because of the UK’s money rule, not because of anything Kent decides.
GOV.UK’s money you need page says you must show course fees for one year (up to nine months) plus living costs of £1,529 a month in London or £1,171 a month outside London, for up to nine months. You must have held this money for at least 28 days in a row, and the end of that 28-day period must fall within 31 days of the date you apply.
For a nine-month course outside London, that is £10,539 in living costs alone, on top of any unpaid tuition. If you want to submit your visa application in mid-December, the money has to be sitting in the account from mid-November. A loan sanctioned on 10 December does not help a 15 December visa application unless the lender’s letter is used as evidence instead.
UKVI’s processing times page, last updated 9 September 2026, gives three weeks for a Student visa applied for outside the UK, counted from your biometrics appointment or the ID Check app. The same update adds a warning worth taking seriously: do not book travel until you have the decision. The application fee is £558.
One more change applies to every 2027 starter. Graduate Route applications made from 1 January 2027 get 18 months rather than two years, which we explain in our guide to the 18-month Graduate Route. A January 2027 student graduating in early 2028 falls squarely under it.
If the UK is your only target, our UK January 2027 intake guide covers the UK route in more detail.
Maven Note: Move your maintenance funds into one account in your name, or your parent’s name with the required letter and relationship proof, by early November. Then leave it untouched. The 28 days are counted in the account you show, so money moved into a new account in late November has only been held there since the day it arrived, and one dip below the required amount breaks the run.
Many US master’s programmes admit for spring, the US equivalent of the January 2027 intake, especially at large public universities. The trouble for Indian applicants in October is twofold: most international spring deadlines are closing now, and the F-1 interview queue varies sharply from one Indian city to another.
| University | What the official page says for spring 2027 | Classes begin |
|---|---|---|
| University of Wisconsin–Madison | 30 October 2026 is the last day programmes can recommend international applicants for in-person spring 2027 study | 19 January 2027 |
| Bowling Green State University | International application deadline for spring 2027: 6 November 2026; some programmes set earlier dates | January 2027 |
| University of Arizona | Graduate deadlines set by each department; spring I-20 request deadline 1 December | 14 January 2027 |
Wisconsin’s wording is instructive. The 30 October date is an internal cut-off for departments, which means a student needs to have applied well before it. Many programmes have already stopped reviewing spring applications from overseas.
The State Department’s global visa wait times table, updated 17 September 2026, gives these next-available F, M and J interview appointments for India:
| Consulate | Next available F-1 appointment |
|---|---|
| Chennai | Under 2 weeks |
| Hyderabad | 1.5 months |
| New Delhi | 2 months |
| Kolkata | 2 months |
| Mumbai | 2.5 months |
Put that next to a spring calendar. A student admitted in late October who receives an I-20 in early November and books Mumbai would be looking at a mid to late January interview, after classes have started at most universities. Initial F-1 students may enter the US up to 30 days before the programme start date on the I-20, but that rule only helps if the visa is already in hand.
Slots are released regularly and can be moved earlier, so these figures are not fixed. But planning a spring start around a slot that may not exist is a gamble. Today’s F-1 cost for an Indian applicant is $535 in government fees: the $350 SEVIS fee and the $185 visa application fee. Expect the interview to cover your online presence too, as our guide to how US social media vetting works explains.
Maven Note: If your spring admit is confirmed and your I-20 is in hand, book the earliest slot at any Indian consulate you can travel to, then check daily for earlier slots. Chennai has the shortest wait in the State Department’s latest table. If you have not yet applied anywhere, treat spring 2027 as closed and use our Fall 2027 deadline map instead.
Canada’s January 2027 intake still exists, mostly at colleges, but its biggest constraint is not a college deadline. It is the provincial attestation letter (PAL). IRCC’s PAL page, updated 2 September 2026, sets out three rules that together create a hard wall at the end of the year.
For a diploma or graduate certificate student aiming at a January 2027 start, that means the study permit application, with a 2026 PAL attached, should be submitted before 31 December 2026. Miss that, and the student needs a 2027 PAL. The 2027 provincial allocations have not been announced. Last year’s were published on 25 November 2025, and Canada’s 2027 to 2029 levels plan is due by 1 November 2026. Our explainer on the Canada study permit cap covers how the provincial allocations work.
Students going to a degree-granting master’s or doctoral programme at a public institution do not need a PAL, under the exemption in force since 1 January 2026. The catch is that most Canadian universities closed their January 2027 international windows some time ago. Carleton’s published undergraduate deadline for international transcripts for the January 2027 term, for example, is 15 October 2026. Our master’s vs PG diploma guide explains the exemption and why it matters for the work permit.
Ontario colleges publish rolling lists of programmes still open for each start date. Conestoga’s open programmes page, for example, lists January 2027 among the start dates it is still accepting for. Rolling admission means a programme closes the day it fills, so the page is a starting point, not a promise.
| Step | Realistic timing for a January 2027 college start |
|---|---|
| Apply and receive the letter of acceptance | By early November |
| Pay the deposit and receive the 2026 PAL from the college | By late November |
| Submit the study permit with biometrics booked | By early December, and no later than 31 December |
| IRCC decision | About 6 weeks for applicants in India, per IRCC’s processing-time tool in early October 2026 |
For applications made from 1 September 2026, IRCC’s proof of funds page asks a single applicant to show CAD 23,448 for living costs, plus first-year tuition and return travel. For the full Canadian picture, see our Study in Canada guide.
Maven Note: If a college tells you it has “run out of PALs” for 2026, do not wait for a 2027 PAL to rescue a January start. Ask whether it can defer you to May or September 2027, and plan the study permit around the 2027 allocation once it is published.
Ireland’s January 2027 intake is real but narrow. It runs mainly in business, computing, data and engineering master’s programmes, at a short list of institutions: Dublin City University, National College of Ireland, Atlantic Technological University, Dublin Business School, Griffith College, and a handful of programmes at UCD, Maynooth and Galway. Most large universities keep taught master’s to September.
| Institution | What we found for January 2027 | Status today |
|---|---|---|
| Atlantic Technological University | Students needing a visa had to apply by 2 October 2026 for on-campus January master’s | Closed for visa-required applicants |
| National College of Ireland | 31 October 2026 for applicants needing an entry visa, as listed by admissions portals | Open; confirm with NCI’s international office |
| Dublin City University | Selected January programmes closed on 5 December last year; the 2027 date is set per course | Check each course page |
ATU is the cautionary example. Its January programmes are still open to students who do not need a visa, but Indian applicants had to apply by 2 October. Irish institutions set separate, earlier dates for visa-required students for exactly this reason.
The Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi gives a usual study visa decision time of 4 to 8 weeks on its processing times page, updated 17 September 2026. That counts from the day the embassy receives the file, so add the VFS appointment, one to two working days of transit to Delhi, and courier time back. The embassy also notes that it is handling very high volumes and will not give status updates. Ireland’s Immigration Service Delivery says you can apply up to three months before travel.
Ireland’s student finance rules require immediate access to at least €10,000 for living costs in the first year, shown through bank statements covering the last six months. Large or irregular deposits must be explained. Separately, if your course fees exceed €6,000 you must pay at least €6,000 before you apply for the visa, and that payment must appear on your letter of acceptance.
The six-month statement is the trap. A family that moves money into an account in November will show a large unexplained credit, which slows the file into the in-depth verification the embassy warns about. For a closer look at whether Ireland or the UK suits you better, see our UK vs Ireland comparison.
Australia’s main intake is February, so a February 2027 start is not a mid-year compromise there. It is the standard Semester 1. That makes it the most open alternative to the January 2027 intake this late in the year, but deadlines still vary widely, and they are not always where students expect.
| University | What the official page says | Status today |
|---|---|---|
| University of Sydney | International postgraduate applications for Semester 1 close on 18 December of the year before | Open until 18 December 2026 |
| UNSW Sydney | Applicants from listed countries, including India, receive offers weekly; for other countries the last general offshore postgraduate round for Term 1 2027 closed on 15 October | Open for Indian applicants, subject to programme capacity |
| University of Melbourne | Graduate coursework applications for Semester 1 2027 closed on 31 August 2026 | Closed |
The UNSW detail deserves a closer look, because some guides tell Indian students the last round has gone. UNSW’s admissions page says offers for citizens of its International Student Award countries are issued on a weekly basis rather than in fixed rounds, and India is on that list. The same page warns that visa processing for UNSW students may take longer, and asks students to lodge the visa as soon as the CoE arrives.
For the Student visa (subclass 500), the financial capacity figure for a single student is AUD 29,710 for 12 months of living costs, in addition to tuition and travel. Every applicant must meet the Genuine Student requirement, and India has been assessed at Evidence Level 3 since January 2026, which means documents are checked more closely. Home Affairs does not publish a fixed timeline we would rely on for Indian higher-education applicants; in our experience, plan for six to ten weeks from lodgement. Check the Home Affairs subclass 500 page on the day you apply.
Families planning to travel together should read our guide to Australia’s new rules on students bringing family before paying any deposit. For a step-by-step plan, see our Australia February 2027 intake timeline.
Maven Note: For a February start, an offer in late November leaves very little room. Accept quickly, pay the deposit the same week, and have your Genuine Student statement and financial documents ready to upload the day the CoE arrives.
Here is every published date from the sections above in one place, in order. Treat the dates in bold as walls you cannot move.
| Date | What closes or falls due | Country |
|---|---|---|
| 15 October 2026 | Carleton undergraduate international deadline for January; UNSW last general offshore postgraduate round (not applicable to Indian applicants) | Canada, Australia |
| 30 October 2026 | LJMU January application deadline; Wisconsin’s last day to recommend international spring applicants | UK, USA |
| 31 October 2026 | NCI deadline for visa-required applicants, as listed | Ireland |
| 1 November 2026 | Canada’s 2027 to 2029 levels plan due | Canada |
| 6 November 2026 | Bowling Green State international spring deadline | USA |
| 16 November 2026 | Kent: funds in your account to meet the 28-day rule | UK |
| 23 November 2026 | Kent and LJMU bank-transfer deposit deadlines | UK |
| 27 November 2026 | Kent postgraduate taught application deadline | UK |
| 30 November 2026 | LJMU CAS issuing deadline | UK |
| 1 December 2026 | University of Arizona spring I-20 request deadline | USA |
| 18 December 2026 | University of Sydney postgraduate Semester 1 deadline | Australia |
| 31 December 2026 | Last day to apply for a Canada study permit with a 2026 PAL | Canada |
| 11 January 2027 | QMUL final overseas deadline; Kent and LJMU term starts | UK |
The dates cluster in November for a reason. Almost every January 2027 intake course needs the visa document issued by early December, and almost every visa needs about a month after that. November is when the plan either comes together or slips to the next intake.
Money is where January 2027 intake plans fail most often, because each country measures it differently. The amounts matter, but the timing rules matter more.
| Country | Living costs to show | How long it must be held or shown | Practical deadline for a January start |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK | £1,171 a month outside London, £1,529 in London, up to 9 months; plus unpaid first-year fees | 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of applying | Funds in place by mid-November |
| Ireland | €10,000 for the first year; at least €6,000 of fees paid if fees exceed that | Six months of bank statements | Already in the account by now, or fully documented |
| Canada | CAD 23,448 for a single applicant, plus first-year tuition and travel | Evidence of available funds at the time of applying | Before the study permit, and before 31 December |
| Australia | AUD 29,710 for 12 months, plus tuition and travel | Genuine access to the funds, assessed with the GS requirement | Before lodging, as soon as the CoE arrives |
| USA | As stated on the I-20 for the first year | Shown to the university for the I-20, then at the interview | Before the I-20 request, often by mid-November |
If a loan is part of the plan, the sanction letter usually needs to be in hand before the visa application, not after. Our 2027 funding guide explains how Indian lenders and the 2 per cent TCS fit into this timeline, and our cost of a master’s abroad comparison sets out the full first-year bill in each country.
The January 2027 intake is a legitimate route, and for some students it is the better one. But it has costs that brochures leave out, and families deserve to weigh them before paying a deposit.
None of these is a reason to avoid January. They are reasons to choose it deliberately, with a course you would also have chosen in September.
By mid-November, the realistic January 2027 intake list narrows sharply. Here is what is usually still possible, and what is not.
A rushed January application that leads to a refused visa is worse than a well-prepared September one. A refusal stays on your record and must be declared in every future application, including to other countries.
Do these in the next 14 days
If any step on this list cannot be done in two weeks, that is the signal to plan for a later intake rather than force January.
Founder Perspective
“Every October a parent asks me, ‘Is January still possible?’ and I always answer with another question: ‘Possible for the university, or possible for the visa?’ The universities will often take an application well into November. The visa systems will not wait.”
” The UK wants your money sitting untouched for 28 days, Ireland wants six months of clean statements, the US wants an interview slot that Mumbai may not have until after term starts, and Canada will not accept a 2026 attestation letter after 31 December. The students who make January work are the ones who start with the visa calendar and work backwards. The ones who struggle start with the course and hope the rest falls into place. If January is right for you, commit to it this week. If it is not, there is no shame in a well-planned September.”

The UK, Ireland, the US (spring), Canada (winter, mostly colleges) and Australia (February Semester 1). As of 15 October 2026, the UK and Australia have the most programmes still open, Ireland and the US are closing fast, and Canada depends on getting a 2026 PAL before 31 December.
Not in mid-October for the UK and Australia, but it is late. Many UK postgraduate deadlines fall between 30 October and late November, and Sydney’s postgraduate deadline for February is 18 December. US spring and most Irish January deadlines are closing now, and visa timelines leave little room after mid-November.
It depends on the university. Published examples include 30 October 2026 at Liverpool John Moores, 27 November 2026 at Kent and 11 January 2027 for overseas applicants at Queen Mary. The UK 28-day funds rule usually makes your real deadline earlier than the published one.
UKVI’s processing times page gives three weeks for a Student visa applied for outside the UK, counted from your biometrics appointment. Your maintenance funds must have been held for 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of the application date.
Only if you already have an I-20 and can secure an interview in time. The State Department’s table updated 17 September 2026 showed next-available F-1 appointments of under two weeks in Chennai, 1.5 months in Hyderabad, two months in New Delhi and Kolkata, and 2.5 months in Mumbai.
Yes for college diplomas and graduate certificates, no for degree-granting master’s or doctoral programmes at public institutions. A 2026 PAL is valid until 31 December 2026, so a college student should submit the study permit before that date. The 2027 allocations have not yet been announced.
A limited set, mainly DCU, NCI, ATU, Dublin Business School, Griffith College and a few programmes at UCD, Maynooth and Galway. Deadlines for visa-required students run from early October to early December, and most large universities keep taught master’s to September.
Immediate access to at least €10,000 for living costs in the first year, shown through six months of bank statements, plus proof that at least €6,000 of course fees has been paid if your fees exceed that amount. Large or unexplained deposits slow the visa decision.
It varies by university. The University of Sydney’s international postgraduate deadline for Semester 1 is 18 December 2026. UNSW issues weekly offers to applicants from India, subject to capacity. The University of Melbourne’s graduate coursework deadline closed on 31 August 2026.
It is smaller, not worse. January has fewer courses and scholarships and a tighter visa timeline, and a UK January 2027 start leads to the 18-month Graduate Route. For a student whose course runs in January and whose funds and documents are ready, it is a sound choice.
The January 2027 intake for Indian students is still open, but it closes country by country through November. The UK and Australia offer the most choice; Ireland and the US spring intake are narrowing now; and Canada’s college route depends on filing with a 2026 PAL before 31 December. In every case the real deadline is set by the visa clock and the funds rule, not the university date. Work backwards from your start date, put your money in place this month, and apply only to courses whose document deadlines you have confirmed.
