Fall 2027 Pre-Departure Checklist for Bengaluru Students- What to Do in the Next 6 Months-02

By Team Maven  |  Published 1 September 2026  |  14 minute read

A Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist is normally something a student opens in July, three weeks before the flight, to work out how many kilos of MTR ready-mix will fit in a suitcase. That version of the list is useless. The decisions that determine whether a Bengaluru student actually boards a flight in August 2027 are being made right now, in the six months between September 2026 and February 2027 — and most of them are invisible from where the student is standing.

This is the Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist as it should be written: backwards. Not from the day you leave, but from the day the system stops having room for you. Because the scarce resource in an Indian applicant’s calendar has never been university seats. It is appointments, sanctions, attestations and bank statements — and every one of those has a queue that forms months before you know you are in it.

What follows is month by month, from September 2026 to February 2027, written for students and families in Bengaluru and applicable regardless of which country you are targeting. Where a rule is country-specific we have said so plainly. Where the Bengaluru address matters — and for visa appointments it matters more than most families realise — we have been specific about that too.

The Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist, in short

  • The Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist starts in September 2026, not in July 2027.
  • Transcripts, passport reissue, credential evaluation and loan sanction are the four slowest items. All four are controlled by institutions that will not move for your deadline.
  • Bengaluru has no US visa interview counter. Karnataka F-1 applicants travel to Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi or Kolkata.
  • Funds must be seasoned before they are shown. The UK asks for 28 undisturbed days; other countries want a specific instrument, not just a balance.
  • Nobody misses an August intake for academic reasons. They miss it on paperwork lead times, which is the whole point of running a Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist a year out.

Build the Fall 2027 Pre-Departure Checklist From the Slot, Not the Offer

Here is the sequencing error we correct most often at Maven. A student maps their year forward: tests, then applications, then offers, then visa, then flight. It feels logical. It is also exactly backwards, because only the first two of those five steps are under your control.

The visa appointment is not. Neither is a bank’s loan sanction committee, a university’s transcript office, a credential evaluation body, or a consulate’s processing queue. Those are shared queues, and they lengthen in a predictable seasonal wave every March to July as an entire cohort arrives at the same door at the same time.

So the correct order of thinking is: what is the last date I can be granted a visa and still make my orientation, and what must be true on every preceding date for that to happen? Run that clock backwards and you land in September 2026, which is where you are standing. It is the same logic behind our admission offer versus visa approval breakdown: getting in and getting there are two different processes with two different calendars.

Maven Note: The single most expensive sentence in Indian study-abroad planning is “we will start the visa process once the admit comes.” By the time an admit arrives in March, the queue you need has already formed. The work in this checklist is what lets you walk to the front of it.

The Bengaluru Problem Nobody Puts on a Pre-Departure Checklist

Bengaluru sends more students abroad than almost any other Indian city outside Delhi and Hyderabad. It is not, however, a city that issues many of their visas.

The United States opened a Consulate General in Bengaluru in January 2025, and it opened without visa services in its pilot year. That has not changed in the way most families assume. Bengaluru does not appear among the US posts publishing student visa interview wait times; those remain New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. A Karnataka student applying for an F-1 still travels for the interview.

How far, and how long they wait, is not academic. On the State Department’s own global visa wait times data published in July 2026, student visa appointments in Hyderabad were running at roughly four and a half months.

Mumbai and New Delhi were at about two and a half. Kolkata was at about one and a half. Chennai, which reopened full visa and citizen services in October 2025 after a suspension, was not publishing a comparable figure. Those numbers move weekly, but the shape does not: a Bengaluru family that starts looking for a slot in April 2027 for an August 2027 intake is looking at the wrong end of the queue.

Wait times move weekly. The Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist plans around the shape, not the number.

The picture for other destinations is easier but not automatic. Bengaluru does have a VFS Global visa application centre — at Gopalan Innovation Mall on Bannerghatta Main Road, JP Nagar — handling biometrics and document submission for a long list of countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and France. Biometrics still have to be given in person, on an appointment, in a window that also fills up seasonally.

The Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist, compressed into one line. Everything after February is logistics.

The Fall 2027 Pre-Departure Checklist, Month by Month

Month oneSeptember 2026 — The Audit

Month one of the Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist is not an application month. It is an honesty month. The job is to find out what is actually broken in your file while there is still a year to fix it.

Open your passport and read the dates. Most countries want validity comfortably beyond your intended stay, and several want blank pages. If your passport expires before late 2028, reissue it now. Reissuing in September costs you a fortnight. Reissuing in May 2027, after an admit and before an interview, costs you the intake.

Check what your test scores are worth. IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and Duolingo results are valid for two years; GRE and GMAT for five. Work out whether a score you took in 2025 will still be valid on the date the university receives your application and, separately, on the date you apply for the visa. Those are different dates and students routinely check only the first.

Ask your college for transcripts today. This is the single most underestimated line item for Bengaluru students. University examination sections work on their own calendar, provisional and consolidated certificates are separate documents with separate applications, and convocation dates do not bend for your deadline. If your degree needs a credential evaluation for a US or Canadian application, that evaluation cannot start until the transcript exists, and the evaluation is itself a queue.

Build the shortlist honestly. Eight to twelve universities in three bands — ambitious, realistic, safe — chosen against a budget you have actually discussed at home, not a number you are hoping for. A shortlist built before the money conversation is a shortlist you will rebuild in January under pressure. If you are still choosing who helps you build it, our guide to choosing a study abroad consultant in Bengaluru is the honest version of that conversation.

Month twoOctober 2026 — The Document Factory

Month two of the Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist is when the paperwork either gets built or gets postponed, and postponing it is how February goes wrong.

The 15 October hard stop. If you are an undergraduate applicant targeting Oxford, Cambridge, or medicine, dentistry or veterinary science in the UK, your UCAS application is due on 15 October 2026. There is no negotiation and no late window. Most Bengaluru families discover this deadline in November. US undergraduate applicants working to a parallel calendar should read our Fall 2027 US undergrad roadmap alongside this checklist.

Recommendation letters. Approach recommenders in October, not December. Give each one a one-page brief: the programme, the deadline, what you want emphasised, and the specific project or paper of yours they can speak about. A generic letter from an impressive professor is worth less than a specific letter from a lecturer who taught you a lab.

Write the first draft of your statement. Not the final one. The first. A statement of purpose that has not been through four revisions reads exactly like a statement of purpose that has not been through four revisions, and visa officers read them too.

Maven Note: If you draft your SOP with an AI tool and submit it lightly edited, we will usually be able to tell, and so will an admissions committee that reads several thousand a season. The failure mode is not bad grammar. It is that the essay stops being about you — it becomes fluent, generic and unfalsifiable. Use the tool to structure and tighten. Do not let it supply the content.

Start the money conversation properly. Not “can we afford this” but the specific version: how much is from savings, how much from a loan, whose name is the collateral in, and by what date can each rupee be demonstrated in a bank statement. Every downstream date depends on the answers.

Month threeNovember 2026 — Submit the First Wave

Month three of the Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist is when the earliest and most competitive intakes close, and when the loan process must begin if it is going to be finished in time.

Submit to the early-deadline programmes. Many US graduate programmes, and nearly all scholarship-linked deadlines, sit between 1 December 2026 and 15 January 2027. Applications submitted in the last seventy-two hours before a deadline are the ones with the transcript that did not upload, the recommender who did not receive the link, and the fee payment that failed on an international card.

Open the education loan file. A secured education loan against property is not a two-week process. Title documents, valuation, legal opinion, sanction, and then disbursement scheduling are each their own step, and the bank will want the admission letter before disbursement even though it can sanction in principle earlier. Getting the in-principle sanction in November is what makes March calm.

Understand what the loan does to your tax. From 1 April 2026, tax collected at source on education remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme is nil where the money is drawn from an education loan taken from a financial institution, and 2 percent on the amount above ₹10 lakh where it is not. That was reduced from 5 percent. On a ₹15 lakh self-funded remittance the collection is ₹10,000, recoverable when you file your return — but recoverable a year later, which is a cash-flow event, not a cost event.

Month fourDecember 2026 — Deadlines and the Seasoning Clock

December is the heaviest application month in the Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist, and the month the money has to stop moving.

Finish the applications. Whatever remains after the December deadlines will be competing for a smaller pool of seats and a much smaller pool of funding in later rounds. Later rounds are not equivalent rounds.

Start seasoning the funds. This is the most commonly failed technical requirement in the entire process. Several countries require that the money you show has been sitting in the account, undisturbed, for a defined period — the United Kingdom’s Student visa money requirement is 28 consecutive days, with a closing balance dated within 31 days of the application. A large transfer that arrives in the account the week before you apply does not satisfy it, however genuine the money is.

If your funds are currently spread across a parent’s account, a fixed deposit maturing in April and a chit fund, December is when you consolidate. Weak or badly evidenced finances are the single biggest theme in our analysis of why study abroad visas get refused.

Know the shape of the number each country wants. They are not the same instrument. Canada wants a Guaranteed Investment Certificate, set at CAD 22,895 for the 2026 cycle — the wider allocation picture is in our note on the Canada study permit cap. Germany wants a blocked account of €11,904 for the year, released to you at €992 a month, which we cover in detail in the Germany blocked account and APS guide.

Ireland wants €10,000 evidenced plus at least €6,000 of tuition actually paid before the decision. The UK wants a balance that sits still for 28 days. The US wants credible evidence of funding for the first year at the I-20 stage and again at the interview.

Student visa funds requirements compared for the UK, Canada, Germany and Ireland in the Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist
In the Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist the money question is four different questions. Answer the one your destination is actually asking.

One of these is a payment, one is a deposit, one is a frozen account and one is a bank statement, and families that treat them as interchangeable lose an intake finding out.

Month fiveJanuary 2027 — Decisions Arrive, and So Do Deadlines

13 January 2027, 18:00 UK time. That is the UCAS equal consideration deadline for 2027 entry for all undergraduate courses other than those with the 15 October deadline. Applications after it are considered only if a course still has space.

Chase scholarships you have not applied to. Institutional scholarships at most universities have their own deadlines, usually earlier than the general admission deadline and almost always requiring a separate form. Students routinely assume the admission application enters them automatically. It does not.

Do the visa-appointment reconnaissance now. Not the booking, which usually cannot happen until you have an admission and, for the US, a SEVIS record. The reconnaissance: which post, what the wait time is today, what the biometrics step is, and how long the whole chain takes end to end for your destination. Write the dates down. You are looking for the point at which the chain stops fitting inside the runway to August.

Month sixFebruary 2027 — Convert, Deposit, and Book the Clock

Accept and pay the deposit. Almost every downstream document is gated on it. In the US the I-20 issues after acceptance and financial documentation, and only then can you pay the SEVIS fee and schedule an interview. In the UK the CAS follows the deposit. In Australia the Confirmation of Enrolment does. The deposit is not the end of the admission process. It is the start of the visa process.

Pay the fees that unlock appointments. For the US that means the $185 MRV fee, which you pay before you can schedule an appointment, and the I-901 SEVIS fee of $350, whose receipt you must carry to the interview. Budget also for the $250 visa integrity fee, now collected at the point of visa issuance in addition to those two — $785 in government charges before you have booked a ticket. We break the arithmetic down in the real cost of a US student visa.

February is where the Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist stops being planning and starts being bookings.

Book everything bookable. Biometrics, interview, TB test where required, medical where required. A February booking for a June appointment is not over-planning. It is the only version of this that works from Bengaluru, where the interview itself involves travel.

The Documents With the Longest Lead Times

If you do nothing else from this Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist, start these five. They are the ones where the delay is caused by an institution that has no interest in your deadline.

The five slowest items in the Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist
DocumentWhy it is slowStart by
Official transcripts and consolidated marks statementsUniversity examination sections work in batches; sealed and attested copies are a separate request from the ones you were given at convocationSeptember 2026
Credential evaluation, where a university or licensing body requires itCannot begin until the transcript is issued, and in many cases must be sent by the university directlyOctober 2026

Rules That Will Change While You Are Applying

A Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist written in September is planning inside a moving system. These are the changes already dated inside your window, and they should be checked again before you act on any of them.

Dated changes your Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist has to absorb, as of 1 September 2026
ChangeWhat it doesEffective
US fixed period of admissionEnds duration of status for F, J and I nonimmigrants. F-1 students receive a fixed admission period of up to four years measured from the programme start date on the I-20, with a 30-day departure grace period instead of 60, and extensions filed on Form I-539 with USCIS15 September 2026
US visa integrity fee$250 collected at visa issuance, in addition to the $185 MRV fee and the $350 SEVIS feeIn force
US social media vettingF, M and J applicants must set social media profiles to public and disclose every handle used in the past five years on the DS-160In force since June 2025
UK Graduate RoutePost-study work permission falls from 24 months to 18 for bachelor’s and master’s graduates applying on or after this date. Doctoral graduates keep 36 months1 January 2027
Canada study permit capUp to 155,000 new study permits for 2026 within an overall 408,000 target. Master’s and doctoral applicants at public designated learning institutions no longer need a provincial or territorial attestation letter1 January 2026
Australia student visa chargeSubclass 500 application charge rises to AUD 2,5001 July 2026
India, TCS on education remittancesNil where funded by an education loan from a financial institution; 2 percent above ₹10 lakh otherwise, reduced from 5 percent1 April 2026
Maven Note: Read the first row twice if the United States is on your list. From 15 September 2026 an F-1 admission is no longer open-ended. A student on a course that runs longer than the admission granted has to file an extension with USCIS rather than simply remain enrolled, and the post-completion grace period is now 30 days. This changes how you should think about programme length, thesis timelines and the gap between graduation and a work authorisation. Our full explainer on the end of duration of status walks through the consequences.

The Five Failures We Actually See

After fifteen years of Bengaluru intakes, the reasons a student misses a Fall intake are remarkably repetitive. None of them is academic, and every one of them is something a Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist started in September would have caught.

One: the funds were real but not evidenced

The family had the money. It arrived in the account eleven days before the application. The rule asked for 28 undisturbed days. Refusal.

Two: the transcript request went in after the admit

The student assumed the university would issue on demand. The examination section issued in the next batch, six weeks later, and the batch after the one the deadline needed.

Three: the appointment was hunted, not scheduled

The family waited for the admit, then began refreshing the appointment portal in May for an August intake, at the exact moment every other family in the country was doing the same.

Four: the loan was applied for on the strength of an admit

Sanction on a secured loan took nine weeks. The deposit deadline was three. The seat went.

Five: the passport had eight months of validity

It was enough for the application and not for the visa, and the reissue collided with the interview date.

Nobody misses an intake because they were not good enough. They miss it because a document that takes six weeks was requested in a week that had four. The whole job of these six months is to move every slow thing to the front of the queue while the queue is still short. — Rajshekar Tubachi, Founder, Maven Consulting Services

What Is Left for March to August 2027

If the six months above are done properly, the tail end of the Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist becomes what it should be: short, cheap and unstressful.

  • March to April: visa application filed, biometrics given, medical or TB test completed where required, interview attended
  • April to May: accommodation confirmed and deposit paid, first tuition instalment remitted, forex card and international account arranged
  • May to June: flights booked once the visa is in hand and not before, travel and medical insurance purchased, vaccination records assembled
  • June to July: document set copied and stored digitally, foreign exchange and card limits confirmed, airport pickup and first-week arrangements made
  • July to August: packing, phone and SIM plan, and the paperwork that must be carried in hand baggage rather than checked in

The forex, SIM, bank account and insurance half of that list has its own guide: the pre-departure setup for your 2027 move. Notice what is not on the list above: applications, loans, transcripts and appointments. If any of those four are still open in April, the list compresses into a fortnight and something in it gets dropped.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should a Bengaluru student start the Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist?

The Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist starts in September 2026, twelve months before departure. The application deadlines themselves fall between December 2026 and February 2027, but transcripts, passport reissue, credential evaluation and education loan sanction each take weeks to months and are controlled by institutions that will not accelerate for your deadline.

Does the US Consulate in Bengaluru issue student visas?

No, and that single fact reshapes the whole Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist for Karnataka applicants. The Consulate General in Bengaluru opened in January 2025 without visa services in its pilot year, and Bengaluru is not among the US posts publishing student visa interview wait times. Karnataka applicants attend an interview at New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata. Bengaluru does have a VFS Global visa application centre at Gopalan Innovation Mall, JP Nagar, which handles biometrics and document submission for several other countries.

How long is the wait for a US student visa appointment from Bengaluru?

It depends on the post you choose and it moves weekly. On State Department data published in July 2026, student visa wait times were about 4.5 months at Hyderabad, about 2.5 months at Mumbai and New Delhi, and about 1.5 months at Kolkata. Check the current figure for your chosen post before you assume a timeline.

What is the fixed period of admission rule and does it affect Fall 2027 students?

Yes. From 15 September 2026, DHS replaced duration of status for F, J and I nonimmigrants with a fixed admission period. F-1 students are admitted for the length of their programme up to a maximum of four years, measured from the programme start date on the Form I-20, with a 30-day grace period after completion instead of 60. Students needing more time must file Form I-539 with USCIS before the authorised stay expires.

What are the total US student visa fees in 2026?

The I-901 SEVIS fee is $350, the MRV visa application fee is $185, and a $250 visa integrity fee is collected when the visa is issued. That is $785 in government charges before tuition, living costs or travel.

When is the UCAS deadline for 2027 entry?

13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time for all undergraduate courses except those with a 15 October 2026 deadline, which applies to Oxford, Cambridge, and medicine, dentistry and veterinary science courses.

How long do I need to keep money in the bank before applying for a student visa?

It varies by country and it is a technical requirement, not a formality. The United Kingdom requires funds held for 28 consecutive days with a closing balance dated within 31 days of the application. Canada uses a Guaranteed Investment Certificate, set at CAD 22,895 for 2026. Germany requires a blocked account of €11,904 for the year. Ireland requires €10,000 evidenced plus at least €6,000 of tuition paid before the decision. Start consolidating funds in December 2026 for a Fall 2027 intake.

Is TCS charged on money sent abroad for education?

From 1 April 2026, tax collected at source on education remittances under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme is nil where the money comes from an education loan taken from a financial institution, and 2 percent on the amount above ₹10 lakh where it does not, reduced from 5 percent. TCS is not a tax; it is recoverable when you file your income tax return, but it is a cash-flow cost in the year you remit.

When should I book my flight tickets?

Only after the visa is stamped or issued. Every year a number of Bengaluru families book on the assumption of approval and then pay a change or cancellation penalty when processing runs longer than expected. Book accommodation earlier, since it is usually refundable or transferable, but never flights.

Do I need to make my social media accounts public for a US student visa?

Yes. Since June 2025, F, M and J applicants have been required to set their social media profiles to publicly viewable and to disclose every platform and handle used in the past five years on the DS-160. Restricted visibility is treated as a credibility concern rather than a neutral choice.

Does my TB test certificate expire?

Yes. A UK visa TB certificate is valid for six months from the date of the test, and it must be issued by a clinic on the approved list, of which Bengaluru has its own. Do not take the test the week your offer arrives; take it timed against the date you will actually submit the visa application.

The Bottom Line

The Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist is not a packing list, and the work in it is not glamorous. It is a transcript request in September, an awkward conversation about money in October, a loan file in November and a bank account that stops moving in December. None of it feels like progress at the time. All of it is what separates a student who flies in August 2027 from a student who defers to January 2028 with a perfectly good admit in hand.

The advantage of running a Fall 2027 pre-departure checklist from Bengaluru is that the city has everything you need — a VFS centre, approved clinics, Passport Seva Kendras, every major lender. The disadvantage is that it does not have a US visa interview counter, and that the entire city’s applicants queue for the same appointments in the same eight weeks of summer. You cannot change that. You can be six months ahead of it.

If you are targeting Fall 2027 and reading this in September 2026, you are exactly on time. If you are reading it in January, you are not late either, but you have lost the slack, and the slack is what absorbs the one thing that always goes wrong.
