IELTS Paper Test Ending: Which English Test to Book for 2027

If you booked an IELTS in India in the last few years, you probably sat in an exam hall with a pencil, an answer sheet and ten minutes at the end of Listening to copy your answers across. That test no longer exists here. The last paper-based IELTS in India was held on 22 August 2026, and from September every IELTS in the country is delivered on computer.

This guide explains what the IELTS paper test ending actually means for a 2027 intake: what the new “Writing on Paper” option is (and what it is not), which English test each country and visa route accepts, when PTE or TOEFL is the smarter booking, and the retake and validity rules that quietly cost students an intake every year.

It matters now because most Fall 2027 and Winter 2027 applicants will book their test between October and January, and a surprising number will book the wrong one. A UK visa that needs a UKVI test, a Canadian work permit that will not accept IELTS Academic, an Australian visa that will not accept an at-home test: none of these is obvious from a test centre’s booking page. The IELTS Paper Test Ending in India: What Actually Changed

IELTS announced globally that from mid-2026 it would no longer offer IELTS as a paper-based test, with the exact timing set market by market. In India, IDP, which administers IELTS here, announced the timetable on 16 July 2026.

For all the noise around the IELTS paper test ending, three things did not change, and they matter more than the headline. The test content is the same. The scoring is the same, on the familiar 0 to 9 band scale. And the Speaking test is still a face-to-face conversation with a trained examiner, not a recording into a microphone.

If you already hold a paper-based result, it has not been cancelled. IELTS has confirmed that existing paper results remain valid for the usual recommended two-year period. A student who sat the paper test in, say, June 2026 can still use that result for applications and visas as long as it is within the validity window the university or visa authority sets.

The “New Writing Format”, Explained Without the Panic

A lot of what is circulating on social media suggests IELTS has changed the Writing tasks. It has not. What has changed is the way you deliver your answers. There are now two ways to take IELTS in India.

IELTS describes the Writing on Paper option plainly: you see the questions on screen and write your answers by hand. Task 1 and Task 2 are the same, the 60 minutes are the same, and the band descriptors examiners use are the same. Your Test Report Form does not show which mode you chose, so a university cannot treat a handwritten result differently from a typed one.

The part most students miss is that Writing on Paper only covers Writing. Listening and Reading are on computer for everyone now. That has a practical consequence we come back to below: the old ten minutes at the end of paper Listening to transfer answers is gone, whichever option you choose.

Typing or Handwriting: Who Each Mode Actually Favours

There is no scoring advantage to either mode. IELTS says its research shows scores are comparable across formats. The difference is entirely about which one lets you show your real level in 60 minutes.

Choose fully on computer if

• You type at a steady pace without looking at the keyboard. Most students who write on a laptop every day produce more, and cleaner, text when typing.
• You tend to restructure as you go. On screen you can delete, move a sentence and rewrite a paragraph without a page full of crossings-out.
• You lose marks for length. The computer version shows a running word count, which removes the guesswork around the 150 and 250-word minimums.
• Your handwriting becomes hard to read under time pressure. An examiner cannot credit what they cannot read.

Choose Writing on Paper if

• You type slowly or with two fingers, and a timed essay on a keyboard would cost you ideas.
• You plan better with a pen. Some students think on paper and freeze in front of a blinking cursor.
• You have been preparing for months by handwriting practice essays, and there is no time left to switch.

A simple test settles it for most people. Write one Task 2 essay by hand in 40 minutes, and another on a laptop in 40 minutes, with the spell-check switched off. Count the words and read both back the next morning. The mode that gave you more complete, better-organised writing is your mode.

What changes in Listening and Reading for everyone

On computer, you answer Listening questions as you go. There is a short review period at the end rather than the old ten-minute transfer time, so students who used those ten minutes to fix spellings and guess blanks need to practise answering in real time. In Reading, you can highlight text on screen, but you cannot scribble in the margins. Practise on the official computer-delivered familiarisation tests before test day, not on paper past papers.

Acceptance Before Preference: Which English Test Each Country Accepts

This is the section to show your parents. The right test is the one your university and your visa route both accept. Preference comes second. Here is the position for a 2027 intake at the time of writing.

Two words in that table do a lot of work: “varies” and “widely”. They mean the answer is decided course by course, not country by country. Always check the English language page for the specific programme, and screenshot it with the date. Admission requirements are occasionally updated in the middle of a cycle.

UK 2027: When You Need IELTS for UKVI and When You Do Not

This is the most misunderstood rule in UK admissions, and it costs students money every year in both directions. Some book an expensive UKVI test they did not need. Others book a normal IELTS and discover later that their route required a Home Office approved Secure English Language Test (SELT).

For a master’s or bachelor’s degree at a UK university, the university can usually assess your English itself and confirm it in your CAS. In that case, a standard IELTS Academic is normally enough if the university accepts it. The IELTS for UKVI page confirms that for degree-level study, universities may accept either IELTS or IELTS for UKVI.

You need a SELT when your route is below degree level (many foundation and pre-sessional pathways), when your university specifically asks for one, or for some other visa types. The Home Office list of approved Secure English Language Tests taken outside the UK currently includes IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, LanguageCert SELT tests and Skills for English UKVI. TOEFL is not on the list.

What about the new Home Office English test?

You may have read about the Home Office English Language Test, or HOELT, a single government-branded test that will eventually replace today’s SELT arrangements. It is still in procurement, and public reporting in April 2026 put fully remote testing at late 2027 at the earliest. For a 2027 intake, do not wait for it. Canada 2027: The IELTS General Training Trap for the PGWP

Most Canada-bound students think of English testing as a one-time admission step. For anyone who wants to stay and work after graduating, there is a second test waiting at the end of the degree, and it is a different test.

Since 1 November 2024, Post-Graduation Work Permit applicants have to prove their language level. University graduates need CLB 7 in all four skills; college graduates need CLB 5. IRCC’s PGWP language results page lists only five approved tests: CELPIP General, IELTS General Training, PTE Core, TEF Canada and TCF Canada.

Read that list again. IELTS Academic is not on it. Neither is PTE Academic, nor TOEFL. The IELTS Academic score that got you admitted in 2027 cannot be used for your work permit in 2029. You will need a General Training, CELPIP General or PTE Core result, and your results must still be valid when you apply.

For the study permit itself, the main requirement is whatever your institution sets for admission. Australia 2027: Nine Accepted Tests and the Scores That Changed

On 7 August 2025, Australia’s Department of Home Affairs updated its list of accepted English tests for visas. The Home Affairs English language page now lists nine tests taken at secure test centres: Cambridge C1 Advanced, CELPIP General, IELTS Academic, IELTS General Training, LanguageCert Academic, Michigan English Test, Occupational English Test, PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT. IELTS One Skill Retake results are accepted.

For the student visa, the minimum IELTS score stayed at 6.0 overall. Some other tests had their equivalent scores re-set. Study Australia notes that the TOEFL iBT minimum rose from 64 to 67, and IDP reports the PTE Academic minimum for tests taken from 7 August 2025 as 47. Lower scores are allowed if you are packaging 10 to 20 weeks of English language study (ELICOS) with your main course.

Two rules catch Indian applicants. First, Home Affairs does not accept tests taken remotely online, so an at-home version of any test will not work for the visa even if your university accepts it. Second, Duolingo is not on the visa list at all. A student admitted on a Duolingo score still needs an approved test for the visa. New Zealand follows a similar logic: universities set the admission requirement, and Immigration New Zealand publishes its own list of acceptable tests and scores for each visa. Check both before you book.

USA, Germany and Ireland: The University Decides

For these three destinations there is no separate visa-level English test to worry about in the normal case. The university’s requirement is the one that counts.

USA

US graduate schools set their own minimums, usually by programme and sometimes by department. TOEFL iBT and IELTS Academic are accepted almost everywhere. PTE Academic and Duolingo are accepted at many universities but not all, and some departments that accept Duolingo for admission still require TOEFL or IELTS for teaching assistantships. Germany

For English-taught master’s programmes, German universities typically ask for IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT, and each programme sets its own minimum band, sometimes with a floor for each skill. Acceptance of PTE and Duolingo varies widely by university and even by faculty. Ireland

Irish universities publish their own English requirements. IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT and PTE Academic are widely accepted, and some accept Duolingo. Because Ireland does not have a UKVI-style test requirement for degree-level study, a standard academic test is usually enough.

IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL in 2027: When Each Is the Better Booking

With the IELTS paper test ending, the gap between IELTS and its competitors has narrowed. All three are now computer-delivered at a test centre. The differences that remain are about format, speed and acceptance.

Book IELTS if

You speak more naturally to a person than to a microphone, you want the widest acceptance across universities, or you are UK-bound and may need the UKVI version. One Skill Retake is also a real advantage if one band is holding you back.

Book PTE Academic if

You are comfortable speaking to a computer under time pressure, you need a result quickly, and every university on your list accepts it. Pearson added two new speaking question types in 2025, “Respond to a Situation” and “Summarize Group Discussion”, and introduced human marking for content on seven question types. Older prep material that predates these changes is incomplete.

Book TOEFL iBT if

You are applying mainly to US universities, particularly research programmes, where TOEFL remains the default. Be aware that ETS moved to a new 1 to 6 score scale in January 2026, aligned to CEFR levels. Until January 2028, score reports also carry a comparable 0 to 120 score, which helps where a university still publishes its minimum the old way. TOEFL is not a UK SELT, so it is the wrong choice for any UK route that needs one.

Whatever you choose, prepare for the test you booked, on the format you will sit. That sounds obvious, yet we regularly meet students who practised on paper past papers for a computer test, or on pre-2025 PTE material for the current PTE.

Retakes, One Skill Retake and Score Validity: The Rules That Trip People Up

This is where good students lose intakes. None of these rules is hidden, but they sit on different pages and most people only read them after something has gone wrong.

1. One Skill Retake has a 60-day window. According to IELTS, you can retake a single skill once per original test, within 60 days of that test, and only if the original was taken on computer at a centre that offers it. You then choose which Test Report Form to send.
2. Writing on Paper retakes stay on paper. If your original test used Writing on Paper and you retake Writing, the retake must be in the same mode.
3. Check that the university accepts One Skill Retake. Many do. Some do not. IELTS itself advises checking with the organisation before booking.
4. Two years is the common validity, not a universal one. Most universities and visa authorities accept results for two years from the test date. Some programmes want the test taken within a shorter period, and the date that matters can be the application date, the CAS date or the visa date.
5. Old paper results are still valid. A paper IELTS taken on or before 22 August 2026 stays usable for its normal validity period. You do not need to retake it just because the format changed.
6. A retake is a new booking, not a reschedule. If you miss your score, the next full test carries the full fee. Budget for the possibility from the start.

When to Book Your English Test for a 2027 Intake

Work backwards from your earliest deadline, then add enough time for one retake. That single rule prevents most last-minute panics.

What It Costs to Book an English Test in India in 2026

IELTS fees in India rose on 1 April 2026, with IELTS Academic and General Training now at ₹19,000. IELTS for UKVI and One Skill Retake are charged separately, and rescheduling or cancelling carries an administrative fee. Confirm the current figure on the IDP India booking page on the day you book, as fees can change.

The real cost of a test is rarely the first booking. It is the retake you did not plan for, the second test you needed because you booked the wrong version, and the deadline you missed while waiting for a result. Is the IELTS paper test ending in India?

Yes, it has already ended. IDP announced on 16 July 2026 that IELTS in India would become fully computer-based, and the last paper-based test was held on 22 August 2026. From September 2026, candidates can take IELTS on Computer or IELTS on Computer with Writing on Paper.

What is IELTS Writing on Paper?

It is a version of IELTS on computer in which Listening and Reading are taken on screen and the Writing questions are shown on screen, but you write your answers by hand. Speaking remains face to face. The tasks, timing and scoring are identical to the fully computer-delivered test, and results are issued within five days.

Has the IELTS Writing test format changed in 2026?

Is my old paper-based IELTS score still valid?

Yes. IELTS has confirmed that existing paper-based results remain valid for the recommended two-year period. Individual universities and visa authorities set their own validity rules, so check the requirement for each application.

Can I take IELTS for UKVI with Writing on Paper?

No. IELTS has said the Secure English Language Test for UK Visas and Immigration purposes will only be available in the fully digital format, so the Writing section of IELTS for UKVI must be typed.

Do I need IELTS for UKVI for a master’s in the UK?
